Patients that are hospitalized because of a dare...

Published

How many of you nurses took care of a pt hospitalized due to a dare?? If so what's your story...I took care of a patient that ruptured his esophagus because a friend dared him to swallow a shrimp whole. Unfortunately, the man died a couple days after surgery. Has anyone seen bizarre cases like this one?

On our floor we took care of a pt. that had to go to surgery to get something taken off of his member because of a dare. The pictures were quite interesting. It took another look at plumbing that week.

There's a story posted several places on this site about a college guy who stuck Mr. Happy into a ribeye bone, and it got stuck, and when the ER doctor asked for the bone saw, this guy jumped off the table and ran around the ER in a panic because he thought Mr. Happy was going to be cut off!

:imbar

We once had a kid that took a shot of the world's hottest hot sauce. Came into the ER thinking he was having a heart attack.

I took care of a kid that injured his head car surfing....not sure if he was dared or not, but it sure was stupid.

my 2 sons were always in ER because of dares. Ironically, the dares were always thrown out there by my daughter.

One man's stupidity is another man's job security.

I have to wonder if this topic came to mind after the season finale of Grey's Anatomy. Granted I know it's exaggerated and not like the real world, but that was pretty crazy - I had never thought of all the physiological implications of being covered in cement. Anyone ever actually seen a cement injury, considering most of the storylines on the show originate from some truth?

I've heard that cement workers have to be very careful not to get it on them, because it causes a nasty chemical burn, or a thermal burn if they left a chunk of it on too long because it gets hot while hardening (IIRC, the chemical term is "exothermic"). That's the real reason why they wear those heavy rubber boots.

There's a bad joke in there somewhere.
