Nurses dating doctors

  1. Just wanted to get some opinions on this one. What is your opinion on nurses dating doctors/residents? FYI - I'm definately not in this situation, but am a new nurse and just kind of curious because I see it happen a lot already.

I guess I really don't understand how it's even an issue. As long as the nurse and doctor remain professional while at work, it shouldn't be a problem. I think it can become a problem if they happen to bring their love life, along with all of the other issues that can bloom from that, to work.

BTW, my boyfriend of 4 yrs is in medical school and I'll be graduating nursing school in about 1 yr. When we were both working in the mental health field, we happened to be coworkers when we first met. We dated for 2 yrs and were able to keep things professional at work. There were some coworkers who gossipped but that's human nature and it didn't create any serious issues.

I almost wonder if one of the highilghts of getting into the nursing profession for some women is because they like to fantasize things are like General Hospital, or whatever silly soap opera portrays things like this.

I've never wondered about nurses dating doctors and I really don't care.

I guess the "office politics" part of it is what I'm questioning more than anything. I don't see anything wrong with it.....after all, we spend most of our time with other healthcare professionals so it only makes sense. I just hear so much talk about nurses becoming nurses to marry doctors, etc. I was just curious as to how others view nurses (especially "new" nurses) dating doctors.

Often there is a "social gap" between doctors and nurses. It is like high school were the kids from different groups sat at different tables in the cafeteria. I don't see it happening much, but would have no problem with it if the work was not affected. Doctors marry other doctors it seems to me.

Some of the interns and residents don't have a life and the only female/male companionship is the people they work with, so it does happen a lot. I agree that it's a non-issue as long as work remains professional. Most nurses who go out with docs at first keep a lid on it because they know their peers will gossip.

Not to contradict you because I'm sure you hear it a lot, but I rarely, if ever have heard a student or a nurse say they became a nurse just to marry a doctor. School is too hard and competetive to do that.

There were two girls in my LPN class who went into nursing for just that reason. They were quite vocal about it. And they both did end up marrying family practice residents. They were excellent nurses, btw, even if their reasons for going into the profession were a bit odd lol.

I had married doctors approach me while in nursing school. I was so poor I really did not have a phone, I wrote on the napkin handed to me. lol

Definatley happens, we all can name a few gold digging nurses. But the op said "we hear so much about....." I honestly have heard of it, but don't hear so much about it. Maybe because most of my peers come from the BSN school here that is very hard to get into, and the community college ADN with more "mature students".
