How can hospials forbid you from working somewhere else?? That is a new one on me. Is that really legal? As long as it doesn't interfere with the other job they shouldn't have any say in what any of us do in our off time. Is it state sanctioned?? We are not allowed to be employed at another facility within our health system but they have no say in any other employment we have elsewhere. Boy they really do want us at their beck and call. Thank God for caller ID and answering machines!!!

Unless you need the money so badly that you want to land in either the ER or the psych unit as a pt. I would say heavens no. I've been a nurse for 30 years and am married to a student nurse, he's overwhelmed with making ONE choice.

Later, youcan do whatever you want, but for now, nope. Good luck

Talk to both, just to hear about the differences. You'll be surprised by how much great experience you'd get at a small hospital. Nothing wrong with exploring all options and just the interviewing experience would be valuable.

But I must agree. Pick one to start your new role in. You can diversify in a year or two. (maybe prn at small hospital to try it, since you already like the place your in)

Hey Jessjoy -- isn't it great to be interested in everything!!! But I think others above are right, starting two (very different) jobs at once will likley pull you in two! ER will give some broad experience, and you can choose to specialize from there, psych will likely give you less of the basics that you'll need to start.

And, hmmm, y'all, I'd be surprised if it's *legal* for ANY hospital to say you can't have another job... maybe within their own system, yes, but outside? Good heavens! think of all the nurses you know who work agency on days they're not at your hospital, or who do weekends across town at "St. Elsewhere".

You will have schedule conflicts, never have a weekend off, and put yourself under excessive stress as a new nurse. If you truly love ER & psych, I'd vote for the ER -- believe me, you will get alot of crisis/psych in the ER. I think it is great you have found two types of nursing you are interested in -- I'd pursue the ER first.

If, after you have some experience under your belt, perhaps you could do some per diem on the psych floor in a different facility. But as a new grad -- devote yourself to one floor/specialty -- and learn everything you can.

You are going to be a great nurse -- you have alot of interests/goals. Baby steps... you will have a chance to do it all ... Good luck to you. :nurse:

Good luck to you as you finish up school and get started on your career!

I have to join the ranks who have advised you to not bite off more than you can chew as a new grad....give yourself some time to acclimate to the new role...a nurse tech is not functioning as a 'whole' nurse in the ER yet....you will have LOTS more to learn! :)

Do, or at least try, whatever it is that you really want to do. If you don't try, you'll go through the rest of your life wondering, "What if.....?" Everyone told me that there was no way that I could work effectively in outpatient oncology right out of the nursing program. But I did it anyway, and I loved every minute of it!

I'd rather go through life having tried and failed, than to have never tried.

Apply where you are and wait to see if you get the job, will not take long. Then react accordingly!

Take one thing at a time! and one job at a time for now at least!

There will be plenty of time to complicate your life!:roll
