The Indecency of Your Education

In regards to the trending topics of "I can't pass (insert whatever test that is being taken here,)" but I just don't want to/can't/don't have the time to study so I need help now...

You paid for your education. It would behoove you to invest in the time to study in order to enjoy the full benefit of it.

CCC, a Paramedic blogger, couldn't have said it any better; "If you can't put your education near the top of your priorities, how can you expect to have any notion of a successful career in the back of an ambulance?"

He may be talking about EMS, however for nursing, or any other career field, the concept is the same.

Study, put your best forward, and take responsibility for your actions. This advice will not only help you during your education, it will also help you gain respect, professionalism, and personal satisfaction through your career and in life.

We can choose to be in the driver's seat of our education and life or be just a passenger. Personally, I get more out of things when I'm in the driver's seat!

Amen, and having failed one of mine, it gave me two choices: sit and sulk or get back on it and succeed. I got the second choice on my own and I'm proud of that:)Made me a stronger person in the end and a better nurse:)

Maybe I am biased. I love learning, and take the opportunity to do so every chance I get. If I could make a career out of just going to school, I would.

I understand the ones who study hard and just either have a bad day or don't have the knack for said subject. I also understand that life gets in the way occasionally. (Been there, done that)

However, I get irritated and fed up when I hear (or read) that they didn't do well because they decided to spend time at the pool instead, and the teacher didn't review the RIGHT questions before the test. You need to be responsible for yourself and your actions.

I agree that people need to be accountable for their own actions and not blame the professor/teacher's wording of the question for why they got the answer wrong. Most of the time they got the question wrong because they didn't know the answer or did not read the question correctly lol. I think teachers/professors need to be given more respect than they're given by students. Students always arguing questions they got wrong, etc. I am not saying that questioning the teacher is never founded (sometimes there are unfair questions, etc, but that is the exception rather than the rule, and when doing so, you do so politely, not whine like a pre-teen).

I know that wasn't completely your point lol, but that was a huge pet peeve of mine as a student. School has always come easy to me, and I do empathize with those that struggle with tests, but not doing as well as you hoped to do on a test does not give you a fair pass to argue every single question. I earned the grade that I received, whatever that may be, but the new trend seems to be thinking a test was unfair just because it may have been difficult, but that's a reflection in the change of our culture as well.

It really boggles my mind when people don't study and get a poor grade or fail fo that matter, and look as if they don't know what they did/didn't do. I know everyone is different in their learning styles, but you need to be honest with yourself. Why waste money on an education that you are not taking seriously. When I did PN school, I didn't watch TV for the entire 11 months! NONE, I studied and took care of my family. I didn't know what was going on in pop culture and didn't care(although my hubby filled me in,lol) Someone asked me my studying secrets and I told them. It wasn't any secret just common sense, that if you have an hour or two to spare, it would be wise to crack open a textbook or your notes from class that day.

And now that I'm finishing up my prereqs it's mind boggling once again to have my Eng prof give us a "pop" quiz every class based on the reading material due for that class, but practically no one does the reading. I just don't understand. One guy said and I quote word for word "ah man, something told me to read that short story" to which the prof replied "yea I did when I gave you your syllabus". I can't with these people.

if you think it's hard to be in class with them, try teaching them. :uhoh3: oh, god, it's so painful sometimes. still, we shoulder on.:D

I think the biggest hurdle can actually be those multiple choice "critical thinking" questions as people who ace the straight science tests find themselves bewildered by the various choices even when they do know what the "correct" answer is It's a whole different mental trick to think like the authors of some of those questions do.

the sad scary truth is i see a lot of young students cheating their way through school and then cry to the teachers for the extra credit or that question wasn't fair, etc etc etc....

this is not an umbrella statement.

Specializes in cardiac, ICU, education.

OP

I think if more students had your attitude and took personal responsibility for their education, then nursing would truly be a profession for all - and not just a job for so many.
