Just took a look at latest prognostications..... of the 6 available hurricane models, 3 of them are directed toward the Galveston-Houston area. Looks like it may be another exciting weekend.

just saw some tv about haiti and how much they have suffered over the summer

this is just so heart rending, they have so little to begin with and now they are suffering w/o food, water and the inablility of even burying their loved ones

Can you say GLOBAL WARMING!

So true. While I was freaking out about Gustav (it was my first hurricane/evacuation), I heard a news story about how villagers in Haiti could only hear a woman screaming as a mudslide engulfed her and her 5 children. I hate to say it made me feel "better," but we could have it so much worse. Material possessions are just that - material. You cannot replace lives.

As for Ike, my thoughts are with those on it's projected path. I know we're not quite out of the woods here in New Orleans. This stuff sure is scary. Everyone stay safe!

I know! You turn on the weather channel, and wait for the bad news. I think they said today it might not be until Saturday am now. I've been a nurse in Louisiana since 1991 and , even though you get used to it, you never really get "USED" to it, if that any any sense.

I can remember back in the 70's watching my parents and the neighbors sandbagging, wondering if the rain would fill up the street in the culde sac at the end of our street or if the bayou in the back where the sandbags would go would just keep coming and creep in the house. It never did, of course, but as a child, the mind never stops.

I guess the one that stands out in my mind, like almost everyone's, is Katrina and Rita. I hope none of us ever has to see that one again. Some people will never recover from it.

My hopes that we will all stay safe through these next ones, and my prayers for the people in Haiti now.

Ike is not coming. The models are predicting a more westward movement due to the high pressure that will be building over florida which will push IKE to the west and further south towards brownsville. All these crazy people in Houston will no doubt freak out and cause massive traffic that is not necessary.

It is just the weather.....not aimed at us or made to punish us...is just the weather..... We choose to live in areas that have hurricanes. At one time I chose to live in an area that had blizzards often. We did not evacuate, we just prepared for it, just like we do now. Lights, heat and food were just as important. We did not stand to lose our houses or property, but we could freeze to death in them LOL. My heart goes out to those that have been hit so many times this year. But if you know this is what happens, then prepare or choose to move somewhere else. We can build on the shores and proclaim ownership, but you can not change the shape of the ocean and it's need to reclaim soil.

Oh but don't you know that is just a myth? (yeah right...)

i do hpe that these will hit a less populated area..not that it will be better for those who are hit but just that the number who are impacted will be less and that will leave more to assist them

by the way, i don't know how to prepare for the cold, i would certainly be found frozen stiff

Just got an email from Christus Health that they need volunteers for 36 hours to be in San Antonio tomorrow, then to be bused to the costal areas and assist with evacuation of patients. Seems like it is going to hit the Texas coast, or at least they think there is a high probablility of that happening. If anybody is interested in doing this volunteer thing, let me know and I'll get you a copy of the email-I can't do it with such short notice.

Models show it now coming towards Freeport, which is essentially a direct hit on Houston.

My hospital is prepared to activate external disaster mode staffing in the next 24 hours.
