Yes, laughter, as the old saying goes, is the best medicine. The job of a Nurse is hard and very stressful, sometimes for an entire shift. That kind of stress day in and day out can have negative effects on our health. A hearty laugh can help reduce stress by stretching muscles, elevating the heart rate, increasing respirations, and oxygenating the tissues. It's like exercise for the soul. Yes. My husband's ability to make me laugh was the number one reason I got with him (and still remain married to him). Laughter doesn't fix whatever issue that is going on, nor does it make the stressful event any easier, but it does provide you with a moment of relief. Sometimes that is all we need to recharge and get back out there, or it may help you see things from a different perspective. Thank god for good coworkers and the absurd things patients do.

I love when you are so stressed and everything is ridiculous and following Murphy's Law. Then yet another thing happens that is so over the top, and you look at the other people with you and you all just start laughing. Ok, it may often be a case of "laugh or cry" but those moments of laughter can ease the tension and serve as a reminder that we are not alone.

Whether you are laughing at the absurd, out of exhaustion, or because something tickles your funny bone, it can help put your shift back on track, or at least put things in a better perspective.

Laughter and my treadmill have saved my sanity on more than one occasion. Actually, I have now ditched the treadmill in favor of my bicycle, but you get the gist. I believe research has been done which shows physical, as well as mental, benefits of laughter.

I get my daily dose of laughter from YouTube: Key and Peele, and dog and cat videos. :)

I totally agree. Laughter is indeed a stress-reducer for me.

Yes I love using humor on my detox floor.. One standing joke I use is when pts ask for a med.. I say "how much you willing to pay..50 cents will work and I accept IOU.." For some reason the pts love it and we crack up... Makes for a great shift using humor...

This is why I believe that spotted hyenas are superior to humans.

If a lion were chasing a human, the human would be freaked out and probably screaming in fear. If a hyena were to be chased by a lion, the hyena would be laughing about it "HAHAHAHAHA GIGGLE GIGGLE."

If a human realizes that he or she will be without dinner and observes another human eating, the human would be sad. If a hyena realizes that he or she will be without dinner and observes another hyena eating, the hyena would be saying "GIGGLE GIGGLE WHOOP!"

Spotted hyenas have it all figured out. We humans have a lot of catching up to do.
