have you been hired on the spot?

I'm a new LPN started at a local hospital part-time for about one month. Today I went to an interview at a local nursing home. Surprisingly they called me three months after I sent in my resume and more surprisingly, they hired me on the spot for a casual position.

I heard a lot good things about this nursing home, but I'm still feeling stunned that they told me after the casual interview that I'm hired. I just need to bring in a physical sheet, and pass a drug screen and tb test. I'm not sure what to think :)

I have been hired on the spot on several occasions and go to a prospective employer prepared for that possibility. I realize it is not because of my amazing self evident attributes, but because of the employer's need to start someone right away.

thanks for the reminder of the distinction between "self-evident attributes" vs. employee's needs. As a new grad, I'm fully aware of my lack of "self-evident attributes", that's why I'm surprised about being hired on the spot: very casual interview, no reference and employment history check, no salary negotiation. (not even sure how much I'm getting paid)

it all seemed weird to me, anyone had similar experiences please share how well it worked out for you.

Keep your wits about you. Your second post is where all the problems lie for you. No reference, no employment hx check, no salary notification. Yours is a casual position - doesn't matter.

Any orientation? Being casual, are you gonna just get a call, show up, and be given keys and a hearty "good luck"?

I used to work at a pharmacy, and not only did they hire me on the spot (with no reference check or employment hx verification) they asked me to start working that second. I was a little thrown off and very suspicious, but I accepted. They walked me down the hall, introduced me as the new employee and started training me. That job worked out great, I was there for 5 years.

Congratulations! I would be careful though especially since they're rushing to hire you. It doesn't necessarily mean you're walking into a bad situation, because you very well could have just been at the right place at the right time and landed the job. But make it a point to learn ASAP what you've just gotten yourself into.

I always feel mixed upon hearing that someone was hired on the spot. On the one hand, I'm very happy that someone got a job in this tough economy. On the other hand, I also feel bad for the other applicant(s) for that position, each of who will be getting a phone call or letter that starts off with, "I'm sorry, but..."

thanks for the input everyone. They told me there will be four to five weeks orientation. The orientation can be longer if I need. One LPN will be responsible for 25-30 pts and there will always be eight RN on day shifts( for 130 beds). They took me for a tour of the facility, it seems clean and there is no bad smell. There are some dogs and cats running around in the hall, which they call "pet therapy". :)

Hope it will work out well for me. I think I will proceed cautiously since I do need the money and experiences!

Good luck to you. I hope you enjoy your new job, may it lead to an exciting career. :nurse:

First of all Congratulations on your new job! :yeah:. Admittedly, yes I been hired on the spot mind you, I went to the front desk just to deliver my resume along with my application, wearing flip/flops and shorts:eek: I never envisioned being interviewed on the spot. In addition, I never imagine that the recruiter would be sitting next to the receptionist at the time. Evidently, I apologize for my attire, she was a well seasoned nurse and stated "No need, your resume speaks for itself, I would like to contact these references in your presence" Once the references were contacted, she looked at me and said " When can you start?". Therefore, when an institution has needs to fill a position even if you're a new grad, if the stars are aligned just right you will get it. Wishing you the very best on all of your future endeavors...Aloha~

I've been hired on the spot and I've hired on the spot in exactly the way you describe. The thing is, I remember the person I liked, but for some reason someone else was hired, or the position didn't become available, whatever reason. So I called as soon as there was another position and I was happy as a clam that I still could get you.

One time I had an interview that went very well, and I asked if I had the job. The interviewers looked at each other, broke out laughing, and told me I did indeed have the job. hehe

Yes, a few times. Good jobs too.
