I'm a new LPN started at a local hospital part-time for about one month. Today I went to an interview at a local nursing home. Surprisingly they called me three months after I sent in my resume and more surprisingly, they hired me on the spot for a casual position.
I heard a lot good things about this nursing home, but I'm still feeling stunned that they told me after the casual interview that I'm hired. I just need to bring in a physical sheet, and pass a drug screen and tb test. I'm not sure what to think :)
The facility saw that you are working at a hospital. I'll bet they figured that your references and everything would be fine, since the hospital probably checked everything prior to you starting there.
Yes, they are probably really needing nurses. But I think that in your case, they figured that half the battle is already won, since you are already employed.

I was hired on the spot for my current job (a new grad internship in ICU stepdown). I should say I was offered the position on the spot - the position didn't start until a couple of weeks ago and the interview was last October. Of course, the position starting so far from the time of the offer gave them plenty of time to check me out, but given the number of applicants, getting offered it at the conclusion of the interview felt really great. I was the only one hired for this particular floor and the internship thus far has been a great learning environment. I feel really fortunate. Sometimes the stars just align...and sometimes what you have done to prepare yourself for that moment does show through. Often I think it is as much a personality match as anything else, especially as a new grad. I think we all look pretty similar on paper, but being a good "fit" is something that can only be determined face to face.
I was hired on the spot for my job. Which surprised me because I was interviewing while recovering from major knee surgery. I'd been out of the knee immobilizer for 2 days and off crutches for maybe a day when I interviewed, so I had a major limp. And the DON didn't just offer me the job on the spot, she was willing to wait for me to start until my surgeon and physical therapist both gave me the okay to work, which took another month or so. Have worked at that nursing home for about 10 months now, and it's a pretty good job.
I was hired on the spot at my current job. My husband was nervous because there was no salary negotiation or talk of benefits at the interview, but I'm a new grad ASN with no experience, so I was going to take what I could get anyways. As long as the salary is acceptable to you and you got a good vibe from the facility, go for it. And 4 to 5 weeks of orientation is fantastic! I got two weeks and it was enough for me.
Congrats on the job!! I was pretty much hired on the spot by my current surgery center job as an operating room nurse. I really think it depends on the facility and their need. A hospital usually has to go through HR and an entire process, which can take weeks. I was very skeptical about the job since it didn't seem as "formal", but I took it and I absolutely LOVE the work place!! It's very laid back, the managers treat us well, and I'm so happy I took it!! Just because they are treating this more casual, does not mean you need to accept it, or stop you from asking the right questions (job description, pay, hours, ect). seems like they had your information for three months, so ask, what was the process leading up to my phone call? Now would I like to work at a place that does not do background check? Probably, No. however, ask more information about the vetting process for new hires, at minimum you want to protect your potential new patients AND your own license.

Yes, I was hired on the spot - 22 years ago. I stayed 12 years before moving on. Never regretted taking the position.
