Dear student who did that to a physician,

Please don't do that again. At least in my presence.

That chart does not belong to you because you have a careplan to do. You made a mistake of making your rounds when the physician/care team was in situ making rounds preparing discharges, and demanding that HE bring it back to you because YOU'RE not done makes your upbringing questionable. You are not a feral person, so don't act like one.

Believe it or not, the world does not revolve around you, and that unprofessionalism makes me remember your face when you're looking for a job. And Oh yes..I remember behaviors and faces..and this, after all, is really, truly a small world.

Wow! I can't believe someone actually did that!

Just a hunch.....I think he/she/(it )may not make it through nursing school anyway, and if somehow they do...they will quit/fired within the first few months on the job.

I had a situation once (during my orientation) in which I took a chart of one of my patients,sat comfortably in the corner of a room and started reading it..mind you it was saturday,very slow day,not to many docs around,little did I know that a doc with his nurse will show up 5 minutes later furiously looking for the exact chart that was in my hands.But I would never dream in my wildest dreams to demand it back after politely giving it back to them..some people never cease to amaze me though!!!! I feel so embarrased by this student action!!!

Yikes. That's baaaaad.

I personally have never understood why students spend hours on end during clinical with the charts. IMHO, you can get the info you need for a care plan by spending time with your patient, not the chart. Oh, yeah...I get diagnosis, history, consults, meds, labs, but beyond that? My care plans are from listening in on report and virtually "chartless," and they've been well-received. Maybe I'm missing something...

Well I know as far as our school goes, in some of my clinicals we had to make the care plan the night before, and we weren't allowed to talk to the patient until the day of our clinical. Kind of reversed thinking, right? And then the care plan is due, typed, at the end of the clinical day, so nothing can be added except "Evaluation".

I think it takes us so long (especially in the beginning of the semester) because the way the hospital does charting is new to us. I've had all 14 or so clinicals at different locations, so it just takes a bit to adjust and figure out where information is in the chart.

Thankfully it's my last semester and my ICU preceptor is much more about hands-on care than just reading a chart, so I don't have to spend so much time the night before. Nursing is about caring for the patient and not just paperwork??? What a crazy thought!

EDIT: I just realized you said that you didn't see why students spend so much time with the chart ON the clinical day. Oops, I had read that wrong. Yeah I don't get that either :) :) Just spend some time with your patient people!

OMG! calling them feral is a compliment!

Were they wearing shoes?

Can not see them making it thru school, much less working as a nurse.

I am not a rat by nature, but I think I would find the nursing instructor and clue them in, this is unacceptable on SO many levels.
