I thought this was about a book that LasVegasRN recommended with regards to being unhappy at work.

It's a book about career .... I guess styles is as good a way to define it. These mice are going through mazes in order to get the cheese. "Who moved my cheese" is the first of the books by this guy.

Here are the notes I made on the book when I read it. It's about welcoming the inevitable changes that occur in organizations (and in everyone's lives).

Johnson, Spencer, Who Moved My Cheese?, G.P. Putnam's Sons, NY, 1998.

36The more important your cheese is to you the more you want to hold on to it.

38"Maybe we should stop analyzing the situation so much and just get going and find some New Cheese."

42Haw was beginning to realize the difference between activity and productivity.

46If you do not change, you can become extinct.

48What would you do if you weren't afraid?

52Smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old.

54Movement in a new direction helps you find new cheese.

56When you move beyond your fear, you feel free.

58Imagining myself enjoying new cheese even before I find it, leads me to it.

60The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you find new cheese.

62It is safer to search in the maze than remain in a cheeseless situation.

65You can believe that a change will harm you and resist it. Or you can believe that finding New Cheese will help you to embrace the change.

66When you see that you can find and enjoy new cheese, you change course.

68Noticing small changes early helps you adapt to the bigger changes that are to come.

70He realized the fastest way to change is to laugh at your own folly--then you can let go and quickly move on.

74Change happens--they keep moving the cheese

Anticipate change--get ready for the cheese to move

Monitor change--smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old

Adapt to change quickly--the quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you can enjoy new cheese

Change--move with the cheese

Enjoy change--savor the adventure and enjoy the taste of new cheese

Be ready to change quickly and enjoy it again--they keep moving the cheese

88What we really need to let go of is the behavior that keeps causing our bad relationship. And then move on to a better way of thinking and acting.

From the liner notes of "Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson, MD

"Who Moved My Cheese?" is a simple parable that reveals profound truths about change. It is an amusing and enlightening story of four characters who live in a "Maze" and look for "Cheese" to nourish them and make them happy.

Two are mice named Sniff and Scurry. And two are "little people" - beings the size of mice who look and act a lot like people. Their names are Hem and Haw.

"Cheese" is a metaphor for what you want to have in life - whether it's a good job, a loving relationship, money, a possession, health, or spiritual peace of mind.

And "The Maze" is where you look for what you want - the organization you work in, or the family or community you live in.

In the story, the characters are faced with unexpected change. Eventually, one of them deals with it successfully, and writes what he has learned from his experience on the maze walls.

When you come to see "The Handwriting on the Wall," you can discover for yourself how to deal with change, so that you can enjoy less stress and more success (however you define it) in your work and your life.

Written for all ages, the story takes less than an hour to read, but its unique insights can last for a lifetime.

A good book that is a quick read...a MUST read for all of us!

The last company I worked for spent close to 600.00 purchasing "Who Moved My Cheese" bookes for all of it's Vice President's and upper tier managers. The purpose of purchasing the book was to help motivate our employees while the company was under going severe lay-offs and downsizing. The Managers were urged to share the book and it's ideas with their employees.

In my opinion, the book was interestingly written and had a lot of good points. However, it was not a good book to read for the above situation I described. Quite a slap in the face of the employees that were laid off and those that were left behind made to clean up other people's messes.

I'd have rather the 600.00 been spent on buying management a clue, or at the very least, been added to someone's severance pay.

I got the book when the VP suggested I had a problem with "change". I read the book and promptly resigned. :D

I ended up moving his cheese. Ha!

Change is good. :D

We had an inservice on it.

Basically, I think the message is don't be stuck with sacred cows. Grow and change with the times. "That's the way it's always been done" doesn't work.

The mouse that sat and waited for his cheese to return after it had been moved, starved.

I enjoyed reading the book. It gave me a new perspective about change in all aspects of life, especially work. It's kind of funny that after you read it, you start to really notice when people "move your cheese".
