Bought their BSN?!?!?!

Alrighty... We have a new nurse in our ICU/CCU that over the past month has been leading up to telling us that she "bought / achieved" her BSN in 1 month. She readily admits to having her ADN for "over 7 years", and that she really didn't want to "waste the time in a traditional BSN program".

I have to admit, I'm a bit irritated by that for several reasons, with the first one being that I am 1 year into a BSN completion course, and even though I'm not getting as much as I would like out of it, it's the process that one has to take to advance / mature their role as an RN. Second of all, stop the retarded bragging. Third.. well, why the HECK didn't HR find out / figure out that her BSN was bogus? The individual stated that "it's impossible to find out, I got my degree from a school that was closed, and I have transcripts / recommendations to back it up".

What the heck (would love to insert a stronger word at this point)??

Do I have any avenue to report her / deflate this pompous fool for the fake she is?

I would seriously doubt she "bought" a degree. However, stranger things have happened and if she keeps talking about it, someone will find out soon enough. I would take the high road and not discuss it. She will hang herself soon enough.

People will say anything. Obviously this person has low self esteem issues and feels the need to run her mouth. Unless you see that her care is unsafe and/or goes against standards of care, leave it alone. She isn't worth your time and energy.

I'm not sure that would be something I would brag about.

i agree , if she had any sense at all she would know that is not a good thing to be bragging about...

I hate to say it, but there are some people so ignorant out there that they don't even realize what it takes to get a 4-year degree.

I used to work with a guy (that was already working at a place that I was managing years ago), and these employees were getting paid about $8.00 an hour all day, every day.

He kept bragging on how he had a PhD but 'didn't need the money', and was just working there for fun. I casually asked him one day (and I was testing him) what he did for his dissertation...and he didn't even KNOW what a dissertation was.

I also asked him what kind of score he got on his GRE's and he said, "Oh, I got a 3000". (which is impossible)

I went back and pulled up his file...when he was hired, he just put down he had a GED.

Some people!

Start asking leading questions... let them have all the rope they need until their tales are so far fetched that they sound stupid even to their own ears...

And then make sure every one knows the tales...

I was talking to a patient visitor one day who told me she was almost finished with nursing school. I had no reason to not believe her story and was just making conversation. I asked her where she did her clinicals....she said "what are clinicals"? I gave here a brief definition of clinicals and went on my way. I will never understand some people's needs to lie about such things, rather pitiful actually.

I share your %$##*(_)!! towards anyone who would fake their credentials. I am pretty 'old school' and believe that Nurses can only be effective if they can be trusted - and this means we must be authentic in all our professional dealings.

If you can discover where she obtained her BSN, you can check it against listings of accredited schools on many sites such as http://www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/ which is the one for USA Dept of Edu. The NLN also has listings of accredited schools for the US.

In TX, falsely claiming any sort of nursing credential is considered reportable 'unprofessional behavior' in firect violation of our nurse practice act. You may want to check your local regs.

Finally, if BSN nurses are paid more than ADNs, and the degree is fake - it's undoubtedly a violation of your organization's employment practices and probably cause for termination.

There are soooooo many federal regs in the US now, that most organizations do a very thorough background check when they hire - including checking the validity of educational credentials. However, when an existing nurse claims to have 'upgraded' a credential it's usually not confirmed and can easily go undetected.

I experienced something similar. I had worked in a higher-end ladies shoe store selling ladies shoes a while back, and there was a guy who had worked with me who claimed he had his BS and Masters in "international Business" or something similar to that. He told me of how he had worked in Washington DC under one of the senators for a while, so I was confused as to why he was selling shoes (even though we made excellent money, someone who was young and had a masters in international business would probably not resort to selling shoes). I asked some pretty indepth questions about his degree, past work experience, thesis, etc. and it was apparent that he was making it all up.
