The "holy grail" at least in my nursing school is to get a hospital job FAST. So for those that did not get hired at a hospital after nursing school, where did you get your first nursing job. Is in in LTAC/ LTC, SNF, Home Health, Hospice, Private Duty, Clinics..... you name it.

First nursing job: Hospital in ICU

Still working there: Luckily, yes

Do I like/hate it: Over a year out, yes, I love my job. I've had my ups and downs, which I've come to learn is common your first year after licensure. I have a great schedule that works for me (never grew out of my lazy teenager years so having 4 days a week off is awesome), I get paid way more than other new grads in different fields, I always have great stories to tell, and I am proud of the work I do.

I honestly did not enjoy being a floor nurse during my 4 years at all. It was very liberating to simply quit in June and only focus on my graduate studies. It was simply a means to an end in order to have the experience needed for my current program.

My first job- small ICU with amazing people and the best place to work hands down! So many were jealous of me and I was blind at how amazing it was. CNAs did our turns and baths- we just focused on patient care. I still work there prn and love every moment I walk into the facility.

How did I get it- sad from an interview for a non ICU job and my girl friends mother just googled the area and found the job online. I applied that evening and called the next morning. Interviewed twice and hit it off with the manager and the rest is history.

Still work there prn and I love it. At a larger hospital for experience and do not love it, I count down the minutes, however it has gotten better. Some days are worse than others, but my favorite doc being there or a good team of nurses or patients makes the day better.

I guess I am surviving since I am waiting to get into anesthesia school and will probably go prn and go back to my other job.

My first job was at an Assisted living for those who have Dementia or Alzheimers. I enjoyed taking care of the residents but hated the politics that was involved with my job. I eventually left after a year and a half. I survived my first year barely, but don't regret the experience.

My first job was at a plasma donation center. Very unique set of challenges! The job listing was actually on CraigsList -- I did a LOT of research before submitting an application, afraid it was a scam. I worked there almost a year, but the only opportunities for advancement were into management side (not even nurse management, company management), and that's not where my interests lie at all. I was fortunate to get a school nursing job immediately afterwards, where I hope to stay for many years to come.

First job was med/surg. Mostly surgical patients. I loved it, was there 15 years had to quit due to an emergency situation never went back to get a job there because my boss would not work with me ( I had a death in the family out of the country). Now I teach and work on the floor PRN.

New grad starting off in NICU (been on orientation for a couple of months)... I worked as a float nurse tech during NS and was an educator before that (which my nurse educator on NICU seemed to like since there is a ton of teaching in nursing and in NICU in particular). I do love it but there is a STEEP learning curve since we got maybe a 1/4 of a semester on NICU topics during NS. I did do my capstone in peds which maybe softened the blow, but it still boggles my mind how little I knew before I took this job! Good luck!
