More than likely it would be conducted through a phone interview or possibly a video chat. There is always the possibility that you may need to travel to get to the interview as well. But, with technology being what it is today, we are more easily connected even from far away. Good Luck!

It's been a struggle for me to find an out-of-state job. Everyone wants to hire their locals, even though I've gone in person to interviews to prove my interest. Try university medical centers at universities, or regional trauma centers: they seem to be more open to people moving to the region. My trauma center hired people from all over the country, but local hospitals want local people. :down:

Are you interested in Vermont? I had a few interview offers there, but I couldn't find affordable housing through online searches, so I turned the interviews down. I can PM you the hospitals if you're interested.

I had two out-of-state interviews, both in Georgia. One was originally supposed to be a phone interview and the other in-person, but they were also both scheduled during that huge snowstorm that they got last year. Because of the snow they were both postponed to the same day so, instead, I ended up flying to Georgia and interviewing in person.

I've had VERY good success applying out of state. Originally from the PNW, I've been interviewed for new-grad ICU positions in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. Received offers from all.

After researching areas with greater need for nurses, I applied through each hospital webpage.

I received phone calls from HR or nurse managers to set up interviews. Interviews were conducted by phone or Skype-like video conference.

I've applied to jobs in Georgia, Alabama and Florida and received interviews in all three states. I think most employers would like to see the applicant in person, but as many have stated before some will interview by phone/computer. I am preparing to move for a job offer that I received out of state...so it does happen...just realize that for a new nurse relocation assistance may not be available because new nurses come a dime a dozen. It depends on the employer. I've interviewed for positions over the phone many times. Most offered an 2nd, in person interview as a final candidate. I was offered 2 positions where no follow-up interview was requested following the phone interview. Good luck!

I also am applying out of state because I am moving to vermont. So you're not alone!! I've heard of phone interviews being a major thing for out of state applicants... And it does seem a good bit of people get the offer after the phone interview! If I have any in person interviews I'm hoping to schedule them during the same week so I can make just one trip for multiple interviews before moving for good. (I don't want to pay for traveling expenses multiple times ...but if I must I must and you have to be willing!)

A friend of mine had an initial phone interview. He was called a few days later for an in-person interview. He hopped a plane and went from CT to GA a few days later. He was there and back home within 1 day (a long day, but a day anyway). He had to be in work the next day :)

I think the manager was impressed that he was so interested in the position that he took a last minute flight (which was very costly) and made the effort to get there. He got the position and moved about 6 months ago, he loves it there.

@CT Pixie- I was literally in the same position. Went straight from work to the airport, flew to GA and interviewed, flew back and went straight from Bradley back to work. I was offered a job in Atlanta later that day. Fortunately I was also offered my current job in CT the same day and stayed here.

Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask if one applies online for a RN position out of state, and the employer is interested how is the interview conducted?

A question I can answer!

I went to school in upstate NY and was applying to jobs in Northern IL as we were wanting to move to be closer to family. My interviews were all done over the phone (first with HR, then with the unit manager) and the drug test was scheduled at a facility local to me.

I had my job offer within a few hours of my 2nd interview and moved about a week after graduating from nursing school.
