i was working as a new emt back in the day 70's something?. just had a very sad case sids at 3am. family awoke to feed their beloved newborn only to find him cool and blue. they call 911 we arrive in our ice cold state of the art very pre modular, chevy step van ambulance. family is so distraught, wish so bad we coulda done something to reduce their pain. i am working with lucca this mvo former emt who stinks from the stoggie he just did (and stunk up the bus to)! he could giva *&$% about the family. "lets go mac stop playing social worker i wanna get back to sleep in the barn".

there was nothing to be done for the baby i told them that as gently as i could but they kept pleading with us so i did some compressions and transported to ed to let them at least feel something was being done. luckily we had a police portable that we signed out from the precint at the beggining of the tour (ambulances didn't have modats or any radios yet). we radioed to pd to advise ed of the situation.

we got to ed doctor checked out the baby for a few minutes then pronounced. i spent a few minutes with the family then did my paperwork. they were very appreciative that at least we tried.

Like they say..."You can't fix stupid" & "Stupid should hurt"

He needs to change, there's no excuse for that kind of behavior. Sit down and explain he you can't behave like that (ie you're dealing with human beings who are sick). If he doesn't change, report him. His actions are intolerable.

Specializes in Med/Surg, ICU, educator.

I hope this creep isn't still around people. What a sicko!

Specializes in Medical-Surgical.

He'll get his some day. God doesn't like ugly.

I would hope that this weasel had something happen to him to open his eyes to that behavior.

Specializes in Hospice.

He is sick... yes its dead but still we got to respect them. Hard to train someone who cames from nowhere and did not learn how to respect others.

Man!.....it must have been terrible to deal with that on top of everything else. What a night...

My neice died of SIDS at 15 weeks- the nurse at the hospital was so insenitive as to bring a TRASH BAG into the room in front of my sister to place Macy in. My sister succintly told her that if she put her baby in that trash bag she would kick her A$$. This man and that nurse will get theirs- You reap what you sow.

I wish I didn't read this post.

I've rocked one too many babies who have gotten their angel wings. We generally don't send our babies or smaller children to the morgue. This just makes more more than ill.

I'm with Jo, wish I hadn't seen this.

The only spot I've ever seen children go to the morgue was a children's hospital. The others seem to keep children in a quiet room until the funeral home comes, and someone holding the child too, parents if possible. Funeral homes do seem to come out promptly for kids- I guess everyone feels the pain of losing a child and wants to help in some small way.

The EMT described could lose his job if he was reported at the time, but it was 40 years ago.
