i was working as a new emt back in the day 70's something?. just had a very sad case sids at 3am. family awoke to feed their beloved newborn only to find him cool and blue. they call 911 we arrive in our ice cold state of the art very pre modular, chevy step van ambulance. family is so distraught, wish so bad we coulda done something to reduce their pain. i am working with lucca this mvo former emt who stinks from the stoggie he just did (and stunk up the bus to)! he could giva *&$% about the family. "lets go mac stop playing social worker i wanna get back to sleep in the barn".
there was nothing to be done for the baby i told them that as gently as i could but they kept pleading with us so i did some compressions and transported to ed to let them at least feel something was being done. luckily we had a police portable that we signed out from the precint at the beggining of the tour (ambulances didn't have modats or any radios yet). we radioed to pd to advise ed of the situation.
we got to ed doctor checked out the baby for a few minutes then pronounced. i spent a few minutes with the family then did my paperwork. they were very appreciative that at least we tried.
The ambulance driver was a few levels below Ignorant and a few above deliberate and just a complete schmuck, putz idiot!!! He took joy in deliberetly running people off the road when responding to 911 calls even caused an accident once. The system sucked that I was working in small town-everyone knows everyone and is related to everyone like some redneck hill billy incestuous back woods town. Complaints to superiors were ignored, boss would just laugh, minimize and ignore complaints co-workers would also minimize inappropriate behaviors and administration was worthless preffering to ignore rather then deal with issues and complaints
