Hi all,
Im a pre-nursing student and just wondering how long you have been at your current specialty & why? Is there something about your personality that meshes with it? Life-altering experience? Accident? Is it where you thought you would be when you began nursing school? And what specialty, if so, would you like to work next and why?
Oh yeah, whiney adult patients? They are the worst ... give me an all night crying NICU baby any day.Sent from my iPad using allnurses
Be careful what you wish for; neonates going through drug withdrawal can be very trying. However, I would still take 5 of them over 1 whiney adult any day of the week & twice on Sunday! I loved NICU!
Hope you get to go to NICU soon!
I love my adult patients. And I rarely view them as whiney. They don't feel well. So they are asking for help. I work on a floor with a a largely confused population.. That could be called whiney. But i view them as individuals that need help or are in pain due to surgery. I know when I don't feel we'll I still want to cry out for my mamma and curl up in a ball.
I love emergency nursing. It's pure chaos and I revel in it! Peds, Adult, Geriatric, we get it all.
I love that we are the ones who stabilize a pt and figure it all out for the rest of the hospital. When a pt comes in and we put age, history, and test results together to send a pt to the floor with a diagnosis and plan of care.
It's hard core and the teamwork is out of this world. Believe it or not, I look forward to going to work (most nights).
L&D has been wonderful to me. Continually gaining more skills as we went to couplet care and I became a skilled nursery and postpartum nurse as well over the last 27 years. Then 17 years ago I fell into lactation and fell in love and I would not be an IBCLC if I had not started as an L&D nurse as a new grad.
My original clinical specialty was NICU -- because I was fascinated by those little creatures and the person inside those tiny bodies. I also liked the fact that I didn't have to deal with adult-sized messes and smells in that field. I really enjoyed my NICU time and never seriously considered another clinical area.
I quickly moved into being a CNS ... then focusing on Nursing Professional Development (Staff Development) because of it being a good fit for my personality. I like problem-solving, trying to improve patient care/outcomes, teaching nurses and helping them be the best they can be. I also like that in Nursing Professional Development, I get flexible hours and only a few nights, weekends, etc. No holidays -- and I rarely have to be here during bad storms, etc.

You get me, you really do. Thanks for that! :)

Adult Oncology(with med/surg overflow) for 7 years. Did a rotation there during school and it just clicked. The patient population is special, and there are a ton of opportunities for learning(chemo cert, ommayas, etc). Both Onc floors I've worked have been considered to have the best nurses in the hospital. Kind of a lot of pressure, but I learn something every shift. We are also treated as inpatient hospice. Helping someone to die with dignity and comfort is an important thing.

Work in adult med-surg/tele, only because it was the fastest job I could get after graduation and I did not want to be a new grad employment fatality. Couple of years later, I still dont like it and am waiting for the next opportunity to go to the NICU, where I have always known my passion lies. BTW, I never wanted to be a psych nurse either ... hated the class and the clinical from day one through final exam. Hate it even more that my unit tends to be a dumping ground for medically unstable psych patients. It's just not my thing at all. But I don't mind dealing with parents and families, I've been doing that for years. I know I will be happier where I want to be once I get there.
