Nursing Students Male Students

Hi, I'm 19 years old, male who is thinking about taking a BS in nursing. Whats the average age? I know people going to be much older than me and i dont think I will fit in with only 30+ people in my class and thats my biggest concern being the only young male student :S How many young 20's are there compared to the rest? I know its difficult to say, but how many would you say? Thanks. / Young

Hey guys! I was the youngest person in my entire graduating class. I am 20 years old. I really felt out of place, but got close to a few people :)

Specializes in Licensed Practical Nurse.

I'll be 21 when I graduate with my BSN, woo hooo!!

Specializes in Med Surg, Telemetry, Float, ER.

Nursing is a very diverse field. I got my BA in Psychology in 2001 and only decided to get my RN in my mid-20's and achieved my A.A.S. in Nursing last May.

I will tell you that if I had a chance to go back and do everything all over I would have gotten my BSN in 2001 and would have been a travel RN for the past couple years.

I understand your apprehension, but if this is where your heart is, and it is a great field, do not get intimidated by the age of your class mates.

Good Luck!

I was 17 when I started the nursing program and 19 when I graduated with my ASN and started working as an RN. I will have just turned 21 when I get my BSN and I was told I was one of the youngest that the school had ever had. I was by far out of the majority. The average age in the class was around 36. There were student in their 50s and 60s who already had Master's in other programs and only a handful of "traditional" students like myself. I would say that most students were in their upper twenties. But then again, I went to a small private college that was connected to a hospital which tends to have a broader range of students. There are students I graduated high school with me who are going through the BSN program elsewhere, so your age isn't a problem.

I have found working as an RN and being 19 and 20, if people use your age against you, it's only a power struggle. I worked as an CNA on a med/surg floor and as going to graduate from the ASN program within a month when I had a family tell me not to care for their family member because I was "too young to know what I was doing". I was almost an RN, but they trusted a older looking aid who has not yet been accepted in a nursing program to care for their family member. No big deal, but age does NOT always mean experience or that you are able to make better critical decisions. If people give you a hard time in school or at work, it's cheap and really has nothing to do with your skills.

You would be surprised. I am a 33 year old female and my favorite fellow student is a 19 year old guy. I like his enthusiasm, it makes me feel less jaded when we go over certain material. He is like "wow" on everything. Stuff maybe I had a secret eye roll on and he was all thrilled about it. And no I'm not some old lady chasing a "boy toy."

Then again we have another guy the same age in class and people have considered strangling him because he's obnoxious and his ego defense mechanism is high gear everythings "stupid."

Everyone really runs the gamit age wise, however there is more "older" then younger once the classes get harder and the nursing part (clinicals kick in)

Age is a just a number in many ways. I was once 19 too and I don't have kids like most my age, so sometimes younger students like to discuss things with me. They know I have a little bit extra time because I don't have to run off and pick up any kids of my own and things like that.

I also don't blow anyone off for being too "young" or too "old".

My friends literarally have ranged in age from 5 to 85. The very youngest being friends kids or neighbors kids and grandkids who do not perceive me as an adult at times because I don't have children, pretty lax on the amount of cookies they can eat, and don't mind them touching my school books and have regular cookouts. My oldest friend is 87 actually and we have dinner together regularly, watch movies, and her garden grow. My very youngest and oldest friends all enjoy the fact that I have a driver's license:) handy indeed. All are excited I am in nursing school.

There is a lot to be learned from all age groups. Enjoy the journey and don't let age get in the way, just tailor each relationship to appropriate settings, boundaries and common sense. School can be an extension of real life if a person makes it so.

Hey there. It's funny how it seems everyone is concerned with their age going into this type of program. I can see your point of view. I've also heard from some of the older students in my class (40+) that they wondered how they might "fit in". I'm 31 and I figured I'd be in the middle and not relate to anyone! LOL.. Go figure. Truth be told, we're all in the same boat man. Regardless of age, everyone just wants to be accepted for who they are. Besides, who cares about the age of fellow students. We're all students. I'd be thinking about my first job in a hospital with professionals of all ages with all kinds of experience. Not meaning to scare you, just stuff I think about. Good Luck.

You are around my age and you are right we fall in the middle. We all have one thing in common..........Lack of funds :) 19 years old or 65 and all sucking down Ramen noodles (joke)

Specializes in SNU/SNF/MedSurg, SPCU Ortho/Neuro/Spine.

I'm 21 :) We have 240 girls and 7 guys in our class, good ratio if i was single :D

Specializes in Med Surg, ER, OR.

Nope not alone there bud. I was 19 when I started nursing school, and a friend of mine was only 18. He was the youngest in the class, and I was the 3rd youngest. Still at nursing school with

Sadly, I am 17, already in my 2nd sem. Its hard I tell you, you're being forced to work like a true professional but so far I am hanging on. I'm quite the shyest person in my class, but I have been having fun all through nursing school. Right now there's just 1 guy in the class and he is 24 I think, but there is no age difference in our class.

Hope you get through it!!!

I'm 22 with the RN. I graduated at 21. And dont worry about the age factor.
