Yelled at for posting on AN

Published

Hi there,

I got called into my nursing instructors office and was admonished for posting online! They looked at my profile info to find out it was me. What do you all think about this? My mistake for posting or invasion of privacy?

Thanks,

I dont see anything wrong with it as long as you didn't use any names or anything, I personally don't think that what you do away from school is any of their business...

Amen !

Thanks dudette10! I didn't think my original post was inflammatory. I was merely asking a question about styles of instruction.

It is nice to know there are still some sane folks out there who don't feel we should take everything that is dished out to us. I can take a lot of crap, but when folks start to make assumptions, jump to conclusions and jump on the judgmental bandwagon, I will respond.

Thanks again!

You are welcome!

Most of the posters here, though, were not saying anything that was necessarily wrong. I think they were advising caution. I especially liked RN2BDFW's comments about the differences between "right" and "real."

You, Bormio, have a lot of pluck, and I admire that, which is why I supported you, along with my own irritation that your particular comments would come with consequences from an insecure, dictatorial administration at your school. Once they found out that a student from their school had made these comments, they could have used your opinion to solicit opinions from other students and to evaluate their methods. Instead, they took the easy way out and brought the hammer down on you.

I wish I had your pluck when it came to some things that are clearly violating my basic right to a well-formed and articulated opinion. I hope you continue to "not take it," but I'm positive you're also smart enough to know that until our laws catch up with our technology, big mouths make big targets. :)

My sincerest good wishes for you.

I have changed my profile information since my original post. My original post did not name any individual or deal with any specific incident. I have not disparaged or criticized anyone. The purpose of my original post was to determine if my experience in nursing school is typical or if it is outside the norm. I haven't posted anything that I regret or don't stand behind. I guess it would have helped if I included my original post, but of course I won't do that because I would rather stay anonymous at this point.

I haven't looked at your past posting history as it's really not my business - however, judging by some of the replies in this thread, it seems you may have actually cited your specific school in other threads in which you then went ahead to reflect upon them in a not so constructive negative light - I'm going out on a limb to say this is what your school discovered and why you were repremanded...that's what you shouldn't be doing.

If I were to come here and say 'I go to school XYZ' and they suck because 'ABC' and the school caught wind of that, I'd probably be upset too - but I'd have no one to blame except myself:)

You, Bormio, have a lot of pluck, and I admire that...

Ditto that, because I certainly would not have your "pluck". But you can bet I just went and deleted most of my profile. I wouldn't say any of my posts "stir the pot" or could cause interest of more than a passing glance. But I will admit to occasionally having a 'complaining problem', and I'll be darned if my venting or spouting off of the mouth gets me in hot water simply because I couldn't clam up and look at the bright side. :D

Yes, you do have the right to post things. However, as previous people have said BE VERY CAUTIOUS. You have not graduated yet and instructors have their own way of doing things. I once saw a classmate of mine make a comment during a psych clinic, his instructor gave him a talking to and nothing else happened about it THAT SEMESTER. However, Med/Surg was next and clinicals are objective. Guess who washed out? Yup. Instructors are close wiwth each other and work together (mostly for the good I might add), but many a potential nurse has been known not to make it because of objective clinical scorres (usuallly attached to something they did or said but they'll never be able to prove it). Be careful, Nurses eat their young ! (as told to us BY an INSTRUCTOR).

I believe that you have the right to your opp. and to ask advice from others on here that's what this forum is for, but you have to know when to shut your mouth and just let things be. In my opp. I would do what I have to do to make it work while in school and after I was finished then open my mouth. As sad as it true. Nursing instructors can make you or break if you have ****** them off for one reason or another. They do take certain things PERSONAL instead of PROFESSIONAL, which is unfortunate but it is the reality of it.

It's not unlawful. Tell them to go take a hike.

See now I have to go read your posts to see what you wrote.

Rules for the internet to live by and to type by:

First off your not anonymous, but there are ways to make your self that way.

Proxy servers are your friend

Don't use e-mail accounts that are linked. For example your main e-mail is [email protected] and use [email protected].

Lock down your facebook account or have two of them. Don't make your self available to search. Might seem pretty extreme, but we had a case of someone going to the nursing dean saying one person was unstable mentally because of some facebook comments about their personal life.

Above all else if you want to vent don't do it some place that there is a written record of it. As much as I want to put my nursing school on blast for elementary teaching mistakes, organizational skills and unfair practices between testers in the end it won't do anything, change anything, or have any impact on the way we are taught.

Yeah, be very careful. Nothing is private anymore.

I have a question that probably no one really has an answer for....why is it not OK to state an opinion about a school/employer online, when it is perfectly acceptable to say it verbally? The delivery is different, but the message is the same.

I know that I have stated my opinion about my school to people who have asked, but I would never post it online for the reasons stated in this thread.
