Hi there,
I got called into my nursing instructors office and was admonished for posting online! They looked at my profile info to find out it was me. What do you all think about this? My mistake for posting or invasion of privacy?
Thanks,
Bormio
haleyanna....nice name :) mine is hayley ann hahha so I thought that rocked my socks...as for the OP, ahhh!! I'm scared now. I am about to start my first semester and am afraid I will get in trouble...I guess just keep everything real general and no names...my mom always said to be very careful on facebook and that employers check ppl out on it.
Are you using your name? Otherwise, how did they know it is you? Just because they think it is you, does not mean you have to make any admissions, unless of course that screen name is your name. Even then, it could be someone else. How does the school prove this is you? Change your screen name and limit what you post in the future.
Some people just can't stop themselves, whether it be here, facebook, twitter, etc. This is our society's way of venting. The problem is, we act life it's safe, and it's not.
I have seen many nurses post patient info in their status updates, and it makes me cringe. Then another friend will ask "are you talking about 414a"? Come on!!
I think it's a good idea to remain anonymous.
If I really have an issue about what's happening at my school that could ID me, I ask it on another forum I use. Because usually the things you need help with or question are not really specific to nursing, they are more people issues or how something was handled. Sometimes a non-nurse is a better way to go anyway, because they'll give you a bit more of an unbiased view.
That's ridiculous! I would have denied, denied, denied..... Makes me wonder if this webmaster is in any way obligated to disclose identity, which I'm certain the answer is, "Not!"
After all, I believe, a main purpose/reason for this site (which, this site is awesome and has been a huge help to me!) is the need for access to feedback and advice from unbiased identities (such as "me") pertaining to questions of a personal nature, since school policy and nursing laws are well documented and very specific.
I would like to know, "How do you go to nursing school and maintain ANY rights as an individual?" From my personal experience, you must surrender all rights if you entertain the idea of applying for nursing school. Where is the compassion and care for those who may choose a career in a field known for its' compassion and care?

Sorry to say this, but the fault lies entirely with you. If they hacked your account, then it's an invasion of privacy issue. But they didn't do anything more than look at what you knowingly posted in public. Keep in mind that the internet is not as anonymous as we'd like to think it is, and even if you do your best to hide your identity, people may still be able to figure out who you are.
Do I agree with them yelling at you? Depends on what you had posted.
If I were you, first I'd see about a username change. Even better, maybe they'd let you get a new AN account and close the old one. Then I'd be very careful about what I post in the future, especialy about school. I'd also be very careful who I tell about my having a new username/account.
I had this happen to me while I was in LPN school.
I paid to have a lawyer call them and remind them that I had posted no information (and I hadn't- another student told them that I was a member on the board here) and that we still had the right to free speech in this country and they backed off.
I believe that schools and employers need to start being a bit more careful- more so than we should. A lawsuit against a first amendment violation could cause them a heck of a headache, poor publicity and millions of dollars that they could easily lose.
Just my $0.02.

As long as it doesn't violate HIPPA or any of your school policies they can't really 'do' anything about it. You aren't entiled to privacy when you post on a public forum but that being said.... if you aren't violating policy or codes of conduct they can't really say crap. However, you being from a small town there might be other ways to make you miserable. Just saying.
