What are your nursing tricks? I heard early in my nursing career if someone has wrinkles in their ear lobes, they have either chronic HTN our cardiac problems. What tricks and secrets do you look for when you assess pts?

Actually, I believe the crease in the ear lobe is a marker for coronary artery disease. Here is one of several links:

I can't help but look to see if the top of the ear matches up to the corner of the eye. Supposedly, if they don't match up, the person may have kidney issues...

I had to google what you were talking about. I had never heard about this before! From what they're talking about, the older gentleman with the crease near where a normal earring on a woman would go is what they're talking about. I'll have to look for that incessantly now!
The only thing *I* look for is clubbing of fingers. I'm sure you guys/gals all know what that is, however it's indicative of chronic hypoperfusion, though it's a really late sign. The only problem is that my sister has the start of finger clubbing, has no health problems, and is only in her 30's so obviously both of these signs aren't 100% accurate :)

I was told long ago by a dermatologist that people with eczema had lots more fine lines on their palms than the palms belonging to those without eczema. The reason wasn't known at that time by the dermatologist, but I've found it to be true.

My palms look like a roadmap. People are often astonished by how crease-y they are.
One more freaky thing to point out in class, thanks!

Dr Oz mentioned the ear crease thing on Oprah's "Ask the Experts" show and of course Dr Phil (who was on the panel) had creased ear lobes and he claimed to be perfectly healthy. I don't think these markers work for everyone. I remember my husband's grandpa having creased ear lobes and he had no heart or circulation issues.

I did a lot of ortho so I always look at people's nails. Nails can tell you a lot. I told a guy once he had two nails growing on one toe - and the other nurse looked and just laughed! He said he would get his Dr to pull one nail out as I said the good nail won't grow and it will cause ++ pain.
Isn't the human body just bizarre.
