Would you suggest your chosen profession to someone trying to choose a career? If yes, why? If no, why not?
Thanks :)
I absolutely would NOT tell someone to go into nursing. I tell them that I regret it and if I was able to, I would go back to school to be a teacher. It's less money, but I wouldn't care. Actually, I have told a couple young women who wanted to go for nursing not to. These are the reasons: we are overworked, underpaid, and not appreciated. Back when I did bedside nursing, I loved my patients and families. I just couldn't take the stress on my body and the mental stress from being so overworked. And I was in my 20s. I now work for an insurance company and I am respected. I also hear "thank you" from my boss, instead of what I did wrong.
I dont know either. They say its hard work and stressful, but you really dont understand how hard it is until your doing it. Until your slammed with a full load of patients, and you think "what did I get myself into??" They keep laying the work on as you go once they see you have time to take one 5 min break during the whole day, or god forbid you go to the bathroom, or get a drink of water. I have gone hours without peeing, and today I realized I drank nothing for 7 hours!!! And you dont have time to do the things for your patients they really needs, or you miss something because your rushed. Long story short, its a REALLY tough job. But it is soooo rewarding to be a patient advocate!!! The good days are worth the bad. So no I could not suggest someone to because a nurse no could I tell someone not to, because you dont know if you will like it until you are one, working (not orienting). Good luck!!
I can't wait to start nursing school in the fall, and all these posts are scaring me! I am afraid I am going to graduate and end up regretting my decision to choose nursing like some of the other posters. I love medical science, I want to help people, and I want to work in a stimulating environment, but I've read so many so many horror stories, and read so many posts about not being able to find work!

I hear you on that! I got accepted into nursing school and an xray program, and I'm thinking x ray might be the way to go!

I definitely would. It has been a great second career for me, the money is good and the opportunities are nearly endless, in my experience.
