Your loved one has to have surgery at your hospital. Let's say it's something fairly routine--a chole, a hip replacement, an appy.

What would your response be?

yes i want them at my hospital, if i didn't trust the hospital I worked for i wouldn't be there.

no freakin' way!

nor would i go to my own hospital -- i make it a policy never to be naked where i work!

i work in a large, inner city hospital on the east coast with a predominately minority patient population. my parents are retired farmers from the midwest. my mother, who has never been soft spoken would probably treat the locals to a display of racism they'd remember for years to come! (and i'd be cringing with embarressment about for years to come!) when my dad had chest pain while visiting, i took them to the closest suburban hospital -- and both my folks were very happy there!

Sure would - I worked at the level one trauma center and that is the ONLY place in my area I would send anyone.

Without a second thought! My facility is the best in the area.

No kiddin'.

:D the naked thing is my policy too!

which is why i chose to have my last child at a different hospital. even though i'd had two of my previous children there - but i didn't work at the hospital then. makes a big difference.

as to my family - yes, i would take them to the hospital where i work to be treated. in fact, they have been there. for surgery too.

i wouldn't work someplace that i didn't think was a good place to go as a patient.

It all depends on few factors. Do you know the docs well enough, how's nursing staffing, how long it takes to get admitted,.. etc

In my (family) case I would definetely say YES! I know our docs and have seen their sucessful surgeries as well as knowing our excellent nursing staff. Without a doubt I know my loved one would get the best care possible.

Another good reason would be your loved one would probably get

better care (and possibly a better, for example private room instead of semi-private). By pulling few strings and being present there frequently, things get done faster like tests, labs etc and you'd know who to call to address problems.

If it had to be few of the other hospitals I've worked at: my answer would be NO. Inexperienced doctors, surgeries done by medical students, unsafe nursing staffing, long wait to get admitted. NO. I would not wish that for my family member.

BUT ...there are times when I would consider doing some research. If surgery is pretty complicated and has not been either done frequently in your hospital or has not had good outcome..I would search for the BEST DOCTOR in another hospital.

Surgery, yes. The ER, heck no!!! ICU yes. The floor i used to work on, yes. The other floors, no.

In a heartbeat, yes. 6 of us have switched from life long community hospital to my health system ones.

Half my family have been inpatients there in past 3 years and ER ROCKS. Dad was back bowling 6 weeks post quadruple bypass; triple A caught by my favorite Urologist who insisted on testing--repair done by vascular surgeon's insistance at another hospital resulting in complications needing treatment at my facility. Dad refuses to go to other hospital due to nursing care issues: "3 different nursing caregivers in 12 hours, never told me what type nurse/introducted themselves."

for sure yes, even the naked thing, I prefer to deliver my babies where I work, which is labor and delivery. Nothing like having the people you work with taking extra special care of you or a family member. I say you get special treatment which is very reassuring to me and my family. I wouldn't have it any other way. I figure I'm not freakish looking when naked and all the other women working with me have their babies there too, so there's not much room for being caddy when it comes to seeing me naked or a family member.

I'd have the opposite feeling about the "special treatment". I would be saying to myself "it took working here to get platinum care??".

When i had surgery a few months ago, i got treated like everyone else, no better. Even that was top notch.
