Would you hire an MUSC grad over anyone else?

Nurses General Nursing

I am wondering how true of a statement this is. I am in a nursing program that is not MUSC, and I was recently told by someone in the medical field that by having a degree from MUSC (we were talking exclusively about nursing jobs), someone would be hired ANYWHERE in the country and be put on top of the list of candidates. I understand completely that that could apply in the state of South Carolina, but I was utterly gobsmacked to be told that this University has that kind of far reaching prowess and regard in other parts of the U.S.. I mean, before I even moved here I had never heard of it. My question to other nurses out there is if you have heard of MUSC in other states, or if you have done hiring if you would agree with this statement? I am trying to get a feel for rough the job outlook will be for me when I graduate next year and every new hire position is autosaved for MUSC RNs. For the record, I am more than able and willing to relocate for a job, but deeply enjoy the Charleston area.

Specializes in ORTHO, PCU, ED.

Had to google it.

Specializes in Trauma Surgical ICU.

I'm in SC and a MUSC nursing degree holds no more weight than any other competent school in the state. I didn't go to MUSC and I had no problem getting a job with my CC ADN.

Specializes in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

I have never heard any mention of this school or it being any kind of advantage. You determine how well you can get hired (unless you went to one of those scam schools that went belly-up earlier this year), not your school.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

I love Charleston and am aware of MUSC by proximity (I am in Savannah) and because my husband considered applying to medical school there (until we did the math and realized his GI Bill wouldn't go very far there), but I didn't realize they were so top tier! ;)

This is the first time in my 9 year of being a nurse that I hear about MUSC. Maybe it matters in the state you are are Like if you are in PA and graduate from Jefferson or John Hopkins you will impress but at the moment of the truth, Nurse Beth who graduated from Looney toon community college can turn out to be way better nurse.

Specializes in Eventually Midwifery.
I lived in SC for 10 years and I didn't know they HAD a nursing program. I am pretty sure one of our OT is getting her ODT there, so they must have expanded.

I assume you mean that the OT program must have been expanded. The nursing program is over 100 years old.

ETA: When I was accepted to MUSC, it cost $15,000 a semester for 3 semesters.

Man, what a good price! Now it is upwards of $30,000 and 4 semesters long.

Specializes in Palliative, Onc, Med-Surg, Home Hospice.

I was accepted in 2008. Dang, I knew tuition in SC was getting ridiculous (Have you seen the tuition for Furman U? My daughter wants to go there) but that was really crazy! Glad I went to G'ville Tech and saved my money.

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.

I was into horses when I lived in Sc, Aiken to be exact. Aiken has a nursing program at USCA, I was pre-vet Biology then. Heard wonderful things about Charleston and the school!

Never heard of it. I live in CA but I grew up and went to school in the south.

Specializes in Trauma, Orthopedics.

What's a MUSC.
