Working and studying in the UK

Published

We are seeing a few threads on working and studying in the UK for a BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care at the Anglia Ruskin University or something similar.

Going this route will not enable you to stay in the UK once you have finished. There are no shortage of carers in the UK and even if you are lucky to get a student visa to the UK you will not find a employer willing to assist you to work as a RN as most if not all NHS trusts state they will not assist in work permit unless the job is on the shortage occupation list. Current guidelines for working in the UK is under review and expected to change in November 2008 to a point system and you must pass an English exam although exceptions if you are from a majority English speaking country. Plus EU requirements are employ own citizen first then EU before anywhere else in the world. If you are caught working illegally in the UK there are consequences for you and also fines for the employer. Student visa requires that you can prove you can support yourself and any dependants that come with your and not rely on the state and not work. Please be aware there are scams around and if any doubt what so ever please contact the British embassy in your country and ask them.

hi guys. i made an extensive online research on this thing and apparently its a scam, using the name of a uk organization when in fact it is not connected...ha! made me pay 2000gbp. but not thanks.

with regards to working visas for uk, there are already growing offers here in the philippines. many have been deployed already. most of the nurses are assigned in nhs hospitals in rural areas, ive heard. are there really vacancies in rural areas?:nurse:

There are not many hospitals in rural areas, many hospitals have been consolidated to larger towns and cities. For example where my parents live (they live in a town with approx 19,000 people) they have a small hospital where the A&E/ER was changed to a small injuries unit and everything else has to go to approx 20 mile in 2 directions for more advanced treatment or emergency treatment. Roads to both hospitals are not great and can take well over 30 mins driving. X-rays are performed only on certain days when someone travels from the other hospitals to perform the X-rays and people have to book before they go. There are 2 small wards for long stay but everything is restricted and very minimal staff. Most obstetrics if consultant based is done at one of the other hospitals to without the community GPs and midwives pregnant women have no choice but to travel. Although the town is a large town and growing the health authority moved a lot of stuff away from the town and consolidated it. This has happened in a lot of places all over the UK.

Again unless the nurse meets the requirement of the shortage list I can not see how nurses are getting work permits when there are many nurses in the UK that if needed will move for work

I highly doubt that any NHS trust is recruiting in the Philippines right now, probably one of many rumours that are not true.

Hello,

I actually applied on that UK organization they have project in the Philippines that will run for 3 years. When i saw an adverttisement in Manila Bulletin. I received that email as well so i went to their office in Makati. I can say they are really an organization funded by all universities in UK & Commonwealth countries.

They dont charge fees, match you in a right career, help on all documentations and visa application and the good thing is they will help the students on financial assitance.

This organization in Makati works for me. I can say they are the only legal entity in Philippines as i have been in all agencies all over the country, they will charge you at high fees without any guarantees, you need to pay first before they talk.

At first im on doubt and research it and learned they have a similar name organization in UK but if you really think about it there is nothing to loose so i went there and find a shining light about studying in UK. They offer scholarships as well and bursaries and operating worldwide. My advice is visit their office and see for yourself, im scheduled to go by June in UK on a work based placement course. Post graduate Diploma in Nursing. They help me on everything including the financial assitance. They only offer University courses and Postgraduate courses as NVQs and Vocational courses is starting to be phased out and it is so hard to get a visa since it is just a vocational courses. If you noticed it vocational courses are only offered by agencies.

I am a nurse in the Philippines who is now here in the UK enrolled in the NVQ in Health & Social Care program. The reason for this is because I couldn't get any nursing job or any good paying job in the Philippines. The only one available for me was being a call center agent which requires me to work in the evenings with a salary of PHP18,000 a month( approximately UKPounds 230 a month) already a good salary by Philippine standard. With a family, I simply cannot work all evenings. Then I learned about this learn and earn in the UK. Lucky for me, my parents supported me in paying for my package cost of PHP160,000 ( this was last year 2008. My agent's package has already increased to PHP248K starting 2009 because it is now required by the UK government that at least the first year tuition fee should be fully paid before applying for the visa) as well as show money of PHP600k.

I share a flat with fellow Filipino nurses doing NVQ like me. My rent is GBP100 a month .

I am writing this to give everyone a first hand experience. May this somehow help those reading this forum make the right decision.

Hi! I know it's been 2 years since you got your NVQ, but would you have any idea how long an NVQ application is processed nowadays? How much would it cost --- like your initial cash disbursement right before leaving for the UK, and how much else would you have to spend while you are already in UK, say for example for your schooling, lodging, etc?

What are the requirements (documents, exams, etc) for an NVQ application?

What are your options after completing your NVQ stint?

Thanks! Will appreciate your reply. :-)

Why do you want to do a NVQ that isn't really much use anywhere else in the world and doesn't give you the nursing experience that is generally required?

My friend is now in the UK, her 2 years using student visa is almost up.

With regards to the low pay as caregiver, yes the pay is low by UK standards but she was able to send money back to the Philippines monthly. She helped send her many siblings to school.

I don't know what her next step will be though. But if we're talking about being able to recoup her investment in going to the UK as a caregiver using student visa, yes she was able to. She's not sad at all because she knew what she was getting into, that it was in the capacity of a caregiver.

FYI I'm neither for nor against this, just sharing the experience of my friend.

But you see there is the difference. You said she accepted her caregiver capacity. We've seen too many nurses from your country arrive in the UK and Canada as caregivers and then expect to become nurses without complying with the requirements to migrate as a nurse.

That's the sad thing, too many agencies trying to make money. I prefer the UK-based immigration consultancies. They will help the nurse or BSN grad in deciding which course is right for him/her since they make the same money regardless of the path!

One I talk to a lot here in Manila is very careful in selecting the best course for the nurse while bearing in mind her entire career path choices.

In the end though, the nurse (or underboard graduate) must be diligent in researching the information to decide for him/her self.

i hope i'm in the right thread now.

can someone help me out in choosing a college/university in UK. i plan to take a post grad degree. the tuition fees are really expensive * haha. can you recommend any good school (included in the list of registered sponsors of course) and their tuition is ranging from 3500-5000 pounds?

thanks.

have a good day people.

@hushdawq

i agree. like now, with the new measures done by UKBA about the NVQ, student should be careful about that,i mean if their plan is to study-work it is insufficient to keep up with their expenses. plus UK consultancies concern is to attract students come to them, pay them big and once they send them to UK *viola end of the link. let's not entirely rely to them.

Well a lot will depend on what sort of post grad course/degree you wish to do? Also cost of living can vary depending on where in the country you live. Remember you have to provide proof that you can support yourself for the duration of your course

hi there sir jcardozo! i think we both applied to the same organization you have mentioned! i think they are legitimate because i've personally met their consultant, in an educational fair held in makati and the school he was offering at that time was thames valley university. ive listed my name on their list so in case they have school offers, they can call me. and then the next day (november2009), he called me on my phone (he actually woked me up) and said if we could drop by at their office in makati so my friends & I went there. then he thoroughly explained to us what options we can take if we really want to study in UK. he also said that their support group is supported by the universities in UK so they will not be taking any fees from us. he gave us the application form from thames valley university and the university of northampton which offers partial scholarships. and then by december 2010, he emailed me & my friends stating that the university of northampton was interested in our application so he needed our credentials (tor, recommendation letter) so right after that, we arranged all our credentials. and then by february, he sent us an email saying that the university accepted our scholarship applications. right now, we are just waiting for the offer letter from the university. he said that by march, he will recieve our offer letters.

i think their support group is kinda good because he said that their group is funded by different universities in UK so they wont be accepting any fees from the applicants. the only money that the applicant will be spending is their visa fee and registration fee for the university - this will i think serve as your pre-enrolment fee for the school then you'll pay the rest when you arrive in UK. if i will be pursuing this route, we will be leaving this august 2010, hopefully.

can someone comment on my statement? uhm.. like, i just want to know your reactions or opinions with regards to my decision,. thank you.
