Working and studying in the UK

Published

We are seeing a few threads on working and studying in the UK for a BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care at the Anglia Ruskin University or something similar.

Going this route will not enable you to stay in the UK once you have finished. There are no shortage of carers in the UK and even if you are lucky to get a student visa to the UK you will not find a employer willing to assist you to work as a RN as most if not all NHS trusts state they will not assist in work permit unless the job is on the shortage occupation list. Current guidelines for working in the UK is under review and expected to change in November 2008 to a point system and you must pass an English exam although exceptions if you are from a majority English speaking country. Plus EU requirements are employ own citizen first then EU before anywhere else in the world. If you are caught working illegally in the UK there are consequences for you and also fines for the employer. Student visa requires that you can prove you can support yourself and any dependants that come with your and not rely on the state and not work. Please be aware there are scams around and if any doubt what so ever please contact the British embassy in your country and ask them.

i hope i'm in the right thread now.

can someone help me out in choosing a college/university in UK. i plan to take a post grad degree. the tuition fees are really expensive * haha. can you recommend any good school (included in the list of registered sponsors of course) and their tuition is ranging from 3500-5000 pounds?

thanks.

have a good day people.

hi mam.. i applied for a post grad course in UK and the fee that i will be paying for my whole course is GBP8,950 but i applied for a scholarship program which they also offered but i haven't receive yet their offer letter so i still don't know how much will i pay for the whole 2yrs of my study. btw, the course which i applied to was MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the university of northampton.

hi there sir jcardozo! i think we both applied to the same organization you have mentioned! i think they are legitimate because i've personally met their consultant, in an educational fair held in makati and the school he was offering at that time was thames valley university. ive listed my name on their list so in case they have school offers, they can call me. and then the next day (november2009), he called me on my phone (he actually woked me up) and said if we could drop by at their office in makati so my friends & I went there. then he thoroughly explained to us what options we can take if we really want to study in UK. he also said that their support group is supported by the universities in UK so they will not be taking any fees from us. he gave us the application form from thames valley university and the university of northampton which offers partial scholarships. and then by december 2010, he emailed me & my friends stating that the university of northampton was interested in our application so he needed our credentials (tor, recommendation letter) so right after that, we arranged all our credentials. and then by february, he sent us an email saying that the university accepted our scholarship applications. right now, we are just waiting for the offer letter from the university. he said that by march, he will recieve our offer letters.

i think their support group is kinda good because he said that their group is funded by different universities in UK so they wont be accepting any fees from the applicants. the only money that the applicant will be spending is their visa fee and registration fee for the university - this will i think serve as your pre-enrolment fee for the school then you'll pay the rest when you arrive in UK. if i will be pursuing this route, we will be leaving this august 2010, hopefully.

can someone comment on my statement? uhm.. like, i just want to know your reactions or opinions with regards to my decision,. thank you.

hi! wut consultancy is that if you dont mind? can u PM me the consultancy? are u still pursuing to apply in UK as a student visa even if theres a new tougher rules? im actually planning to apply and try my luck..

cheers! goodluck to us! :)

Im one of those who took this work-study program in UK and now residing in Lancaster UK. I came here last March 2, 2009 with the help of a consultancy in the Philippines and paid about Php380 for the airfare, service fee and tuition for NVQ 3 Health and Social Care. Its too late for me to realize that after you're done with your studies there's no guarantee you can stay here for a work visa. UK is not short of Nurses so job offer is almost unlikely possible for those who took student visa as stepping stone to get nursing job here. Inorder for u to be an RN here, u should have at least one year clinical experience in Philippines, IELTS 7, nursing adaption, and NMC registration. I havent got any clinical experience in philippines coz after i passed the nursing board exam last November 2008, my visa arrived few months after and have to leave on March 2009. Even after completing these requirements will still not guarantee you for a work permit because: 1) UK is not short of nurses. 2) UK being a member of European Union, EU Policy demands work for EU Members only before non-EU.

My student visa is about to expire on October this year but i dont think of extending my student visa again due to impracticality. I'm currently working now as a care assistant in one of the big nursing homes in UK, and they promised to help us (student visa holders) in processing work visa not as NUrse but as a Care assistant.

For those who want to come here via student visa and aspire to be get a nursing work here, it would be better to go to other countries like Australia and Canada, or New Zealand. There's no future waiting for you here. If in any case my working visa application wont be successful, i wont think twice to go home and forget the time and money wasted on staying here.

@KiboyRN - do you mind telling me the duration of your visa? isnt it they give 2yr visa for student visas in NVQ courses? i'm planning to take a post graduate course there in UK, hopefully, this year,. it would be a 2yr course duration,. you said your employer in the nursing home will help you have a job there as a care assistant,. wont that be any good to help you remain there in UK and be a permanent resident and hopefully, apply for a hospital work like nursing assistant?

I agree with what you say, I would not suggest nurses to go to the UK to work as nurses. Underboard passers, however, do have opportunities as caregivers. Currently working in the UK as a caregiver for BSN grads who cannot pass local boards in the Philippines is the best opportunity.

Of course, before you can do that you must complete education in the UK.

whew! :uhoh3: i thought i could find a not-so expensive tf. okay, thank you strawbry. i'll visit their site later. uhm, do they require you to take ielts? i hope they'll approve your scholarship soon.

guys, please enlighten me.what's the difference between MSc, PgCert and PgDip? Is it just about the years of study?

the said university, is not listed anymore in the register of sponsors.

@anica - hi, are you referring to uni of northampton? i panicked with what you've said earlier,. hehe,. so i checked UKBA's list of sponsors, and whew, thank God they are still there. :) ye, they all require ielts or at least an english certification from your school that proves that they use english as their language tool,. i haven't done my ielts though,. but i will when i'm sure that i'll be enrolling to their school,.

hi there sir jcardozo! i think we both applied to the same organization you have mentioned! i think they are legitimate because i've personally met their consultant, mr.roden, in an educational fair held in makati and the school he was offering at that time was thames valley university. ive listed my name on their list so in case they have school offers, they can call me. and then the next day (november2009), he (mr.roden) called me on my phone (he actually woked me up) and said if we could drop by at their office in makati so my friends & i went there. then he thoroughly explained to us what options we can take if we really want to study in uk. he also said that their support group is supported by the universities in uk so they will not be taking any fees from us. he gave us the application form from thames valley university and the university of northampton which offers partial scholarships. and then by december 2010, he emailed me & my friends stating that the university of northampton was interested in our application so he needed our credentials (tor, recommendation letter) so right after that, we arranged all our credentials. and then by february, he sent us an email saying that the university accepted our scholarship applications. right now, we are just waiting for the offer letter from the university. he (mr.roden) said that by march, he will recieve our offer letters.

hi....we also have the same predicament.....i actually did a research about this organization. first, i emailed the british embassy about them and this was their message:

thank you for your email requesting us to verify employment or a website/email address that you may feel is not genuine. we receive many such emails regarding offers of uk employment, visas and lottery enquiries. most, like yours, are attempted fraud.

the british embassy offer the following advice on uk job offers:

genuine uk companies are registered and can be checked on www.companieshouse.gov.uk. genuine uk companies would not give a mobile telephone number for contact details. uk company addresses can be checked on www.upmystreet.com.uk. most genuine uk companies would not use a "hotmail or yahoo" email account.

the british government does not send unsolicited emails with job offers, either directly or through agents. any such approach is therefore from a fraudster. government vacancies are advertised on our official websites, in the uk on www.careers-civilservice.gov.uk

beware - some "job scams" are very sophisticated. genuine uk company web-sites may be detailed within the scam, but the contact email details will be false. they may detail the genuine company name, but at the wrong address - for example: genuine website - www.ukvisas.gov.uk, but false contact details: [email protected]

i researched the name of their institution to the given website but none of their information had shown. i tried to call their office number in uk but seemingly cannot be reached or it must have been not yet in service. until, i came up to make an inquiry with university of northampton, where i used to submit all my credentials, if they know about the organization and its running consultant, they emailed me this message:

yes, we do have scholarship scheme for postgraduate courses, it is 25%

deduction from your tuition fees. more information can be found in the

attachment. the decision is made by international scholarship committee.

the applicants' academic performance and working experience will be

taken into consideration. you need to fill in the form and email it back

to your agent. roden will forward it to us with the rest of your

documents.

kind regards

i must say, this organization could've been a gateway to all the international students who would like to pursue a career in abroad. either way, we must be observant in every single detail that we're going to. i'm also still waiting for the said offer letter this march. whatever comes up, comes my way...:p:nurse:

Of course, before you can do that you must complete education in the UK.

How can working as a caregiver be the best opportunity, passing boards would be the better opportunity. If they really want to work in the UKk then they will need a pass in local boards and gaining care work experience will not count towards being a RN

Also job unemployment in the UK is still high and priority has to be given to the UK citizens first and then EU.

Absolutely passing the local boards would be the better opportunity.

However, statistically speaking if one has failed local boards twice then he or she has a less than 5% chance of passing the third attempt. This is one reason for such high unemployment among BSN graduates (let alone licensed nurses). However as a BSN graduate, he or she can enter a caregiver course in the UK and in 1 year be a licensed caregiver.

They SHOULD be made aware that they will probably never become RNs but it is definitely a way to prevent the 4 years of education as a nurse from going completely to waste which is currently the only alternative.

I have also seen some changes with the Australian and NZ student nurse process for foreign nursing grads too but that, of course, belongs in another thread.

If you could come here for a while and see the situation from the Pinoy Nurse /Nurse Grad perspective then you would clearly see why it is a better choice for those who cannot pass local board.

NOTE: I absolutely DO NOT advocate the care-giving course for licensed RNs. Nurses should work as nurses.

Can you suggest any consultancy here in the PI that will help me with my application for SV route.

have a nice day everyone.
