Work while going to nursing school???

Published

Is it possible to work (full time or part time) while going to nursing school??? If so, what would a typical day look like? What about clinicals, will that interfere with working? Are clinical sites flexible with your schedule or do you have to be present with everyone else?

Obviously, i need to pay bills. I have money saved up but i feel like i have to work at least part time to even pay the bills.

Any thoughts on the issue will be appreciated.

From my experience so far, I think the question is, "Is your job flexible around nursing school?" My school does not give people a pass if they do not come to clinical, if there is an emergency, then you can do a ton of make up work, which is extremely painful and then put on probation. Look into the current student handbook of nursing at your desired school or ask someone in the nursing division office. i think working part time is very possible for people to do while in nursing school. get a planner where you can see one month at a time-it really helps to organize your time. i hope this helps and good luck to you.

Its my first semester and I am working part time. I am PRN though, and my supervisor pretty much lets me makes my schedule. I agree with the PP that your work schedule should be flexible as you'll probably not want to work a full shift the day before an exam, your clinical schedule will change every semester (as well as lecture), you'll need plenty of quiet time to study (not unless time at your job will help you with this), you'll want some down time (you don't want to be working on nursing school stuff and working ALL THE TIME), and you'll need time to practice your skills.

The nursing school I want to go to said that they don't recommend you work the first semester at all. The first semester is 8-5 M-F. So it isn't impossible but in order to get enough study time, it'd seem hard to work more than a few hours.

My work is flexible and I've already started discussions about becoming a contract employee so that a 20 hour minimum wouldn't be enforced. I'm not sure it'd work out and my husband is against me even trying. Going from my income to no income though is very scary.

You and your husband are definitely going to have to work together. I am married with a toddler. We depend mostly on my husband's income right now, which is about $26,000 annually. Not a lot. So it requires some sacrifice, budgeting, and prioritizing. Both you all are going to have sacrifice some things so you can financially survive while you're in school. Hopefully you will be able to get financial aid. Use it to help you all out. Budget it well. Don't splurge with your finaid. Its okay to let it sit in the bank until you need it. My husband understands that our temporary sacrifice should lead to a better life for us.

I worked FT, six days a week and maintained As and Bs throughout the program. I enjoyed nursing school, so I didn't have to put much effort into studying outside of class. Definitely do-able, just prioritize and pay attention during lectures. I also recorded lectures and played them anytime I was in the car.
