Hi everyone,
I've been currently working at a LTC facility since mid-January 2016. We are quite short-staffed. My boyfriend and I are wanting to go to Cancun in July. I plan on putting in my vacation request this week. My facility has been known to be stingy on accepting time-off requests... and I'm kind of worried. What if I've already paid for my vacation, and they decline my request?
Has anyone have any experience on this? Thanks!
Don't "request" the vacation. Simply state (in an email) that you are going on a trip to Cancun and cannot work that week. If they bring up some BS about not being able to give time off, just reply with this: "Unfortunately this is a problem. I will not be available to work that week."If they reply with anything other than acceptance of your leave, then say "Are you trying to interfere with my vacation to Cancun?"
Just stay on the offense and make them feel as uncomfortable as possible. Suggest that they are trying to sabotage your relationship with your boyfriend.

I think that you are ridiculous. 6 months is quite a long time to be working without a vacation. I can't imagine anyone sane arguing against that.

I think a lot of people work six months - and longer - without a vacation. Living costs money.

Those people are wasting their lives in a fairly meaningless grind.
Work to live. Don't live to work.
I've successfully pressured my manager into giving me time off for something when it would leave a gap in the schedule by making the manager feel uncomfortable and awkward by suggesting that she was interfering with my life. "I want to make it clear that while you are my manager, you cannot interfere with my personal life or career goals." This will put them on the defensive.OP: you can also go to the HR director and state to them that your manager is trying to make you work when you won't even be in the country. Make her look as unreasonable as possible. Eventually she'll realize that she'd wish she just gave you the time off.

OP, PLEASE have a little more common sense than to listen to this mess.
Most places have deadlines about submissions for "prime time" vacation requests. April is pretty late to be submitting a prime time request, plus it's early in the OP's employment.
In my experience ( yep I work too), at "most places" the only reason it would be late is if someone else beat her to requesting that time off or if her schedule has already been set for that time.
Where I've worked in the past and currently we bring in travelers to cover June through August vacations, the agency contracts are often set shortly after the new year.
Exactly my point. My work does to. They are expecting and planning on people taking vacations. So, if the week is not taken already, then it shouldn't be too late to request the time off unless one has already been scheduled to work.

Then I hope you also paid for trip insurance or you will be in a real bind. Getting the time off required for a trip like that during summer months, with what is by many LTC facilities standards short notice for "prime time" vacation requests and add to that you are consistently short staffed and you have worked there only three months or so before asking for significant time off and I am guessing that your odds are not good.
