Is there a medical word that you absolutely hate? Or one that you can never seem to pronounce correctly?

Hate:

  • Meatus. (Eww)
  • Gargle.

Mispronounce:

Prophylaxis. I ALWAYS say prophylaxicks.

I have a co-worker that says Cefazolin wrong and is convinced she is right. Drives me nuts.

Cant pronounce:

The generic form of Bactroban (mupirocin)

The generic form of Pulmicort (budesonide)

Specializes in Public Health, TB.

Can't pronounce the generic form of Zaroxolyn (metolazone).

Specializes in LTC, Rehab.

That's funny. On your mention of Bactroban (mupirocin), I thought you had it wrong, because I've been saying 'Muciprocin' at work, ha ha ... it just shows how crazy all of what we have to try to remember is.

I always want to say "Myooki-pry-on"

And "byood-neh-sone" for the other one.

Not. Even. Close.

Squat. Moist. Yes, my friends love making me squirm by saying "moist squat" whenever they get the chance. I have a former friend who pronounces it "ezactly". No! Also "expresso" and "excetera".

For the longest time I pronounced "acetaminophen" ASS-it-oh-men-a-phen. Emphasis on the first syllable.

Specializes in Behavioral Health.

I have a preceptor who says prazosin "praise oh sin," when everyone else says "prazz uh sin."

Has anyone mentioned metropolol? Or buproprion?

People have a hard time with where to put Rs.

Metoprolol gets me.

Specializes in Pediatrics, NICU.

I cannot say the word "alveoli" without it sounding like "ravioli" even though I know that's wrong.

Specializes in LTC, assisted living, med-surg, psych.

Speaking of mispronunciation: I've never been able to say "asterisk" correctly. I can say "ass-ter-isk", but run all those syllables together and it ALWAYS comes out "asterix". So instead of sounding uneducated, I usually say "that little star thingie above the 8 on the keyboard". Haha!

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I also hate it when patients ask "give me a shot" of something for pain. Yes, I am happy to give you pain medicine and treat your pain but dont talk to me like Im a drug dealer.
