Wondering if 50 is too old to go to RN school

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

I just gradurated in june of this yr as an LPN, Would love to go on to RN school, but not sure because of my age. Does any one know anything about this bridge program LPN to RN and how long it takes and if you can do this on line in one yr. I have my first job as a LPN in a Nursing care facility full time, Just wondering if I should take the time and money and move forward when I have maybe 15 yrs to work.

Debating on what to do!!

50 is the new 30! I say go for it! :)

If you just did your LPN just do it now while you've got the school on the brain. You'll breeze through it. You don't realize how much of RN school you just got. You just did all the guts of RN the part that will be new is the leadership decision making and integrety and ethics. Just do it!!!!!!! I am 42 and I just did my RN 5 years ago and I thought I was too old and I was going through a divrc and had a little one but the time flew and I would never change it. you will have better income and higher responsibility. smile and do what you think you can handle. :)!!!!!!!!!

I completely understand how your feeling. I'm in the same boat. My husband and I are both in our 50s and we do want to retire some day. Rather than planning for our golden years I'm accumulating more debt. Then again there is our health. I plan to continue taking good care of it but who knows what will happen. Even when I retire I still plan on working part time if I can. But will I be able to work long enough to pay off my debt and still enjoy the fruits of my labor with my husband. Then again there's the responsibility that comes with being an RN. I've noticed that most newly graduate RN's are placed in a position that carries a heavy workload. I worry about this too. Getting thru school at the age of 50 is one thing, but keeping up the pace at that age is another story. In the workplace it seems that age does matter. It's a tough decision.

Can you tell me more about how Excelesior program works?

I just turned 54 a couple of weeks ago and I just got my acceptance letter today to get my prereq's done starting this fall.

So if things pan out right I will graduate in 2011 as LPN and 2012 as Rn, pay off my student loans by the time I am 71 and will be doing my rounds in my specially made walker complete with water fountain, chart table, med cart and GPS so I don't get lost all rolled into one.:smokin:

50 too old?? Nawwww

Hmmm. Debt paid off when your 71 and pushing a walker. Your thoughts are my greatest fears.

Age is not a factor....When you want something bad enough you go for it. I know of a program that you could enter and get your RN online, Indiana State University. It is an LPN to RN/BSN program. It will take about 36 months if I recall correctly. That is all depending on the LPN courses that will transfer from the program that you graduated from.

Best of Luck, and keep on goin' for it!!!!:bowingpur:yeah:

It's all in how sharp you keep mind, good for you, and good luck with school!

I heard Indiana State was pretty expensive. I also heard Excelsior was less expensive. Do you anything about them?

Yeah, they are a little pricey, but worth it if you are self motivated and disciplined in your study habits.

Hell no! You'll probably retire at, what, 65? So you've got 15 more years to work? 15 years is a long time. . .

Specializes in Clinic, Travel Meds, Acute Clinic.

The way the economy is right now and the fate of social security . . . you may be working until you are 75!

Do it! Be an inspiration for somebody else..
