will universal healthcare ( in the usa) cut RN pay?

Nurses Activism

Published

I been hearing this debate off and on for a long time about how if Obama gets universal healthcare to go ( if he gets elected of course)though in the US that nursing pay will be cut dramatically. I would think this has to do with the fact that we would all be working for the government and that there will no longer be competition. There are many people in my nursing class that said they will leave nursing if thats the case. I also talked to several doctors that said the same thing about medicine in general. Im just curious if anyone has some good info about this. Thanks

It seems to be a red flag to just say Universal Healthcare. Too bad,as healthcare in this country makes no sense at all. Only the people without the means to pay (without health insurance) are required to pay full price for doctor and hospital care. Asa result,we have a poor record on infant mortality. People need to use common sense and get insurance companies out of the drivers seat.

reliable.

What isn't reliable are people that rely on their beliefs and not the facts.

Facts are in your face and they can not be spun. More fellow POWs of McCain than not have stood against him.

1>Well lets start here, Have we taken a literal vote or head count of the POWs to see how they all truly feel, or are we just counting the more vociferous ones. There are no facts there just opinions voiced from what you have shown us. You saay you love facts, then show us facts, not trumped up propoganda.

If McCain is to be taken at his word then so are they. As such, the sheer number of POWs speaking about his behavior would qualify as fact. If that is not enough, his documented behavior and the files released with the Freedom of Info Act are further proof.

2> The Freedom of Misinformation act, still has not released enough evidence to determine if there was a another shooter on the "Grassy Knoll" or if the CIA was truly involved or not in Kennedy"s assassination. They have not shown the truth of the Bay of Pigs invasion. And the list goes on.

Either you are blindly following McCain or you purposely ignore the evidence. Either one is a frightening thought.

3> I am not blindly following McCain and the Diva. And I am not purposefully ignoring evidence. Just waiting for it to be shown to me. Just as I am not accepting you as a source of the "Truth" or as a "Guiding light" of principles.

Unfortunately this is the way of the world. People hear one thing, watch one show or read one holy book and believe they have found the truth of things.

4> I do not even feel that way about Tiger Woods or Annika Sorenstam

Belief. The scariest of all acts of irrationality.

5> the scariest of all acts, is believing one is always right and everyone is wrong.

BTW I am Democrat and very much farther too the left. And I have been so longer than you have been alive.

Age means nothing. I met an 85 year old fool once. ;)

Foolishness doesn't partake in age discrimination or partisan behavior...

If you would like to debate that is fine. If you require a lesson I could indulge that too but it must be done in another thread as we are going off topic yet again...

Dangerous statistic for an argument when you start to look at the number of qualified nursing students turned away from nursing schools each year. When it becomes politically beneficial to do so, it won't matter if there is a Republican, Democrat, or Martian in the white house, only small adjustments in legislation needs to be made for us to open the flood gates and produce more RNs than Obama campaign promises.

Not sure I understand your point?

If it's because your "schools of nursing" are oversubscripted then what has that got to do with a UHC system? Even in Canada they have to turn away suitable candidates from a number of schools.

To me that screams out a problem with your universities than anything?

Over here in the UK, many courses are underscripted, universities have been know to advertise vacancies in the final few weeks before the course is to run. The number of places is less then 2005, nevertheless the lack of appeal is more down to the competition to get a job, can take 8-12 mths so many newly qualified look to find work in the US, or Australia.

Hope is that as many as 10,000 nurses will retire in 2010 so providing opportunities.

If I ever want or need a lesson, I will find a qualified instructor.

I seriously doubt that nurses would loose (release?) their jobs because of socialized medicine, at least in the narrower focus. Looking at it from a wider perspective, the way we provide care may change, and our own personal costs of living will most certainly change. This could affect our "net" pay. It could also affect those in our families whose jbs will be affected. This gets into a great deal of accounting issues that are probably not appropriate for this forum.

I don't know what the OP meant when he mentioned that he hoped none of us nurses broke a fingernail but I found the comment quite sexist.

As for Nurse pay, a new grad in the Public system can earn $38, 500 in salary plus penalty rates and overtime (apparently with overtime and penalties it is not uncommon to earn $55, 000 in a year as a grad). We do have a National Union in Australia for nurses which could go some of the way to explaining the payrates. .

.

My daughter graduates from nursing school next year with a ADN degree. She stands to start out with $50k+ at the hospital where she works as a Unit Secretary now. This does not include shift differential. And they will pay for her BSN and her MSN if she stays that long. I just don't see these wages holding under a govt paid health system. But that shouldn't be the determining factor. UHC will be a reality, it's only a matter of time.

Don't worry the cut in your pay will be offset by the increase in your taxes. Socialism always brings everyone (except those making the rules) down to the lowest common denominator. So get ready for massive tax increases and very stagnant wages.

Hi CRNA2007 What are your Anes MDs saying about the future need for CRNAs and their potential salaries given the prospect of universal HC on the horizon? What are your own peers saying and what do you feel? I am consideringCRNA as a career.

Thanks

If we were to mimic what Canada is doing, this is what Nurses in America would be making.

no none knows for sure. the docs are not happy and many are probably going to resort to working half time so they don't get hit with tax increases. Their pay will get cut but they won't be working near as many hours. One thing I do know is there is no one taxes will only be raised on those making over 250k a year. that is the typical socialist mantra to get support and then incrementally lower that number once the taxes are in effect.
