Will suspended nursing license show up on background check

Hey there. I went to treatment for a mental health condition and the state of Alabama has decided to suspend my nursing license due to me being unfit as a nurse even though I was cleared to work again with no restrictions. I did not do anything illegal, I was burned out from years of abuse from my previous job and finally just broke down. That being said, I have decided to change careers and I am very happy but I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not a suspended license would should up on a background check? They are checking criminal, employee and education history. My new field has nothing to do with nursing. Thanks!

It might. You could pay a few bucks and search your own online, though.

@Hannahbanana I did that but it didn’t show up. I honestly just wasn’t sure. Nursing was toxic for me and I am happy to be making this change, I just don’t want it to come back and haunt me for something that wasn’t in my control. Thank you and happy 4th!

The only real concern I can see is if you tried to get another professional license. It is difficult if not impossible to obtain licensure in any field with a suspension/revocation on record. Otherwise, you should be fine. I wish you the best in your new venture.

@VivaLasViejas thank you for your response, that is quite reassuring. I’m sure you’re not wrong about the professional licensing, I’m ready to move to the business side of things so I don’t foresee that being a problem. Thank you for putting me a bit more at ease! Happy 4th to you.

Same to you! ?

I'm so glad that you found a career that makes you happy. You deserve that. Nursing can be a tough career, and working in a toxic environment can take a toll on anyone, and can bring them down. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. But it looks like another door opened for you with a bright future. Best of luck!!

I just find it so frustrating that as nurses we are unable to be HUMAN. We all have things that happen to us in our lives, and these events can cause more havoc with us emotionally than we would like. We also have to take a lot of crap at work and suck it up, also taking a toll on us. But we are punished for seeking out the help we need in order to get through those hurdles in our lives. We get reported to the board and can be suspended, or have licenses revoked for trying to make things better, and be able to continue on with our careers. We should not have to disclose such information unless our physicians feel that we would be unsafe in our practice.

Mental health is a hot topic these days, and it should be brought to the forefront of our leadership that our practice can be a major cause of mental health issues when combined with the stressors of everyday life. Punitive action is not the way to help...

After everything that everyone has experienced during the pandemic and what mental health experts are suggesting could be in the future for all healthcare professions, I have to wonder how this will be handled. Do they plan to just toss everyone to the street? Continue to shame everyone into not getting treatment and sweeping it all under the rug? Human beings cannot endure the hardships that we face in our work on a daily basis, as well as the assault, death, and constantly finding ourselves being forced to choose between our integrity, ethics, and values and our jobs. They're not going to have anyone left.

Suspending your license because you received mental health treatment is a violation of your civil rights.

I'm sorry this happened to you and I hope it does not affect your future.

I think you should file a complaint with the ACLU, even though they might not take action. They choose what they take action on. But it's free to you to file a complaint online.

If you are denied a job, I think you need to retain a civil rights lawyer.

I recently applied to a non nursing job through a well known pharmacy and when they did a professional check for sanctions they got the report of my license being on probation. Instead of just asking me why I’m not in nursing they went digging.

This!

To the OP it might not if you are not applying to a new job that requires a professional license in healthcare. The different Boards do communicate with eachother.
