Will LPN's be around for long?

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

From some of my own research, I did read that LPN programs have remained stable since the 90's. I have been thinking about starting an LPN program and going through with school. I do not want to go through everything if there is no future for LPNs because then of course I would have wasted my time and money. My overall goal is to be an RN, I was thinking of doing LPN and then doing an LPN-RN bridge program. Please let me know what you all think.

You've taken a screen shot? Are you having it made into a wallet size to keep and carry? Seems odd to me.

I have no intention of voluntarily removing anything I said, as I see absolutely no need. If a moderator feels I am out of line because I want to know if you are, in fact, a nurse as you intimate, then so be it; it will be edited or removed. Same with yours.

I haven't questioned anyone else's qualifications, nor their "right" to be a member here, as you have just claimed. I wonder what post of mine you are referring to where you say I have done so....but then again, I suppose I don't actually care, as I know what I have said and in what context I have said it. And I'm unconcerned.

I did not place any value of one degree over another. I did not value one license over another. YOU, however, have done exactly that, stating that "an LPN is not the equivalent of an RN" (not even sure why this was stated, but you did it, so..) "not all RNs are equivalent"(indicating your feeling that an ADN is not as worthy as a BSN in nursing) because YOU value one license over another, one degree over another. Your words, not mine; you cannot have it both ways. You say it's "despicable" to make such a valuation yet you do exactly that. What I think on the subject hasn't yet appeared on this thread, so you cannot know what I feel about it...unless you are stalking my posts on other threads? I guess you must be, as you are claiming I have made other statements on "my blog" (I don't have one). Your claim that it is 'despicable' regarding the valuation of one license over another has no reflection whatsoever on me, as I did nothing of the sort.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: anyone who makes blanket statements about what "all" or "most" LPNS and RNs think, want, and feel.....and who uses phrases such as "those entrusted to our care" should expect to be asked WHAT that care is: if you are a nurse. If you are an LPN, if you are an RN.

Your refusal to answer one of the most basic questions on this website (ALLNURSES) indicates an answer in and of itself, and I stated as much.

At this point, you can huff if you prefer, but it doesn't change my opinion of your statements, nor does it change the opinions of the others who recognize your postings for what they are.

FWIW, I happen to believe that BSNs are quite valuable; as an ADN myself who is continuing her education toward a BSN, I most certainly see the value. It is the rest of what you wrote, and how you wrote it, that bears some criticism.

And now.....we're done.

We encourage a good debate. This means you are free to disagree with anyone on any type of subject matter as long as your criticism is constructive and polite.

This is divisive, rude, and derails the thread. Our first priority is to the members that have come here because of the flame-free atmosphere we provide. There is a zero-tolerance policy here against personal attacks. We will not tolerate anyone insulting other's opinion nor name calling.

Our call is to be supportive, not divisive.

Please stick to topic

Thank you, Esme; my apologies to the OP for my part in allowing myself to get drawn in another direction. That issue, as I see it, is now dropped.

OP, with your original question, the straight path is the fastest, but if that doesn't suit your life, an LPN program is a great way too start, plus if you hate nursing you haven't put a ton of time, credits, and educational money in. Just stay away from for profit schools. Find an adult school or a CC for your course.

This post was not meant to offend anyone so I apologize if I did. I've been accepted into the LPN program in my area and I am happy with my decision! :)

Thank you! Congratulations, I wish you the best of luck!

There will never be a time where LNVs/LPNs are phased out, at least not in southern California i was working in a nursing home as a medical asisstant for a doctor that had a contract with many nursing homes in california , I pretty much went to every single nursing home in california , i then decided to do the LPn program i know plenty of people who took the plunge and went straight to RN and hate the job , i just finished my LPN schooling on December and i am scheduled to take my nclex at the end of next month, some of the observations i made while working at nursing homes is that actually if anything RN is being phased out , at every facility i went to there would be about 10-15 LPNs and like 2-3 rns , Rns are lazy and have the lpns do everything thats another thing i observed , now days facilities are thinking how they could keep cost down .... well the answer is hiring LPNs lpn salary in california 17-34$ an hour depending on experience and where you work . Rns is like 30-40$ an hour .... there are only a few things that Rns can do that LPns cant like starting Iv , or Iv push and initial assessment which i saw plenty of Lpns doing that instead of the Rns, the only reason i see why a facility would hire an RN is took make sure they keep an eye on what lpns are doing..... also a huge myth that i have been hearing is that LPNs cant work in hospitals .... maybe where you live but in southern california Kaiser hires LPNs and starts them at 27$ an hour .... have 7 friends from my school that graduated a few months before me all of them working at kaiser straight out of school , the care plans that you do in school where annoying and they tell me its not even like that in real life, everything is on the Computer just point and click and then write a summary of whats going on with the patient . The medications orders are sent via Internal network the hospital has and also some nursing homes so you never really have to be on the phone with the Drs , you just print out the prescription and use your nursing judgement ..... in california we need nurses bad Speciall lpns , thats why when you go to any nursing home its all philipinos who speak terrible english but have a working visa and come to work in california , I have asked The main head honchos at hospitals regarding the situation with lpns and why there are so many filipinos and they all told me the same thing , our country is no producing enough nurses therefore we open our borders and have people come do the jobs that we should be doing but dont .... any how those are my 2 cents

Thank you! Best of luck on taking your NCLEX! 😊
