I started my pre-req's for nursing in 2004 - 2005. I took chem, A&P1, Bio, and Psych. (I had previously earned an Associates) I stopped to have another baby #3 (my last baby) and we also moved into a new home. I would love to go back to school now if I could, but realistically it won't happen for another year. I will be 35 this November and I feel like this clock is ticking. Becoming a nurse has been something I have wanted for a long time and I'm not ready to give that dream up!
Are there any future nurses who have been in similiar shoes? How did you feel going back to school and not being the 19 year old in your class? I need advice and encouragement! Thanks!

I am 39, I started my pre reqs in 2004, I will be 41 when I graduate if I get in this spring. I felt great about going back to school, I feel so much more mature this time around, and have wonderful work/study habits, compared to when I was 19, I have a goal and direction! I will be 41 with or without a nursing degree, I thought it would be so much better to be with :)
I am 38 and will be starting nursing school Wednesday. Alot of people in my class are older adults. I have to agree with kluellen that I wouldn't have been able to do this when I was younger. I didn't have the focus and drive that it requires to get through nursing school. Don't get discouraged, the only thing I'm jealous about when it comes to the younger gals is that they can wear them skinny jeans and I can't :rotfl:(had 4 girls!). Good Luck!
I Became a nurse at 40 and my sister-in-law got her nursing license at age 60! She was treasured in her class. It is never too late.
You will bring to nursing school your life experience. You will have so much more to draw upon then the high school graduate. So far from being a disadvantage, it will be a huge advantage.
Good luck!
:yeah:
you can do it!
Hi,
Don't feel like you are too old! I am 48 and in my first semester of an ADN program. There are a few of us in the class that are in there 30s and 40s and of course we have the young'uns (20s). I agree, that age is just a number...think of the "life" experiences you will be bringing to your education.
Hang in there and don't give up!
Never to old if you are healthy! I got accepted in January at 39 yrs., I turned 40 in June, and I will be 42 right after I graduate in May of 09'. I was not ready to give up my dream, age was never really a consideration. I have a husband and three kids 14, 13, and 10 and I worried more about fitting my life around school; so far, so good! Also, I don't plan to retire until I'm ready, so that probably won't be 65. I will work until I can't, or don't want too anymore. I go to a community college and 1/2 the students in my class are around my age, we all get along great younger and older!
Hello. I am in nursing school now and the age range at my schol is from 18-54. It is not that bad to do. It seems like your already about half way there. Go for it. It doesn't matter how old you are. If you want something bad enough you won't let anything stand in your way of getting it. I am in my second year of nursing and graduate this spring. I am only 23 but have people about 42-50 years old in my class that will be graduating with me.
I'll turn 39 in April and graduate from my LPN school 2 months later. Then its off to school again to obtain my RN. I'll be 40+ before I am where I want to be.
The average age in my class is early 30's. We have a few young ones, and one or two who are a bit older than me. But the majority are in their early 30's.
No, 35 is not too old. 45 is too old 55 isn't too old...well, you get the point heehee.
I was 45 years when I started my LPN, I graduated from the RN program at 48. I have just applied to the RN to Masters Program at UND in Grand Forks ND. I feel very fortunate to be able to keep on going to school...
I actually did not worry about my age. I decided I was going to be a nurse. I was in class for 1 reason and 1 reason only to go become a nurse.
Good luck

Go to the Pre-Nursing Student Forum and check out my "How many 30 somethings" post. I was personally amazed at how many of us there are
. I'll be 38 when I will (hopefully) begin my nursing program and my kids will be 5 and 2 1/2. I am extremely excited and nervous all at the same time. And we aren't the only ones with little kids either
