Wilkes PMHNP 2020

Updated:   Published

Did anyone else get accepted into the Wilkes University PMHNP program? I got accepted into the post-MSN for Spring 2020. Got my acceptance letter today.

Nurseblessings: Thank you! I later discovered the baby feet means we are newer to allnurses lol! I haven’t heard back from loans (I just filled out the FAFSA) I do know that they award up to $20K per year for graduate school—but accrues interest from day one ?.

Nursedebir: That is the track I would do too! I am thinking of deferring though to get more psychiatric experience. I didn’t think I’d get accepted so soon.

I did learn that the bridge program for us is 2 semesters before we could even start the graduate courses ?....so that was disappointing. First bridge class starts Jan 13 and goes for 15 weeks ...the clinical portion for that class is that 15th week for 3 days in Wilkes.

dcabrera: what type of psych experience do you have? How long have you been a nurse? The time spent on the BSN portion will allow you more time to gain experience before getting into the heavy stuff. That is odd about the first 2 semesters being not counting towards the graduate courses, where did you get that information from? Everything that I have read from the school says two courses, one semester to bridge to BSN (which will not be awarded). Looking forward to get more information from them hopefully soon.

I have been in behavioral health for over 10 years as an LPN and am a fairly new RN, but very excited to get this process started, this has been a dream of mine for many years.

One thing I'm hoping for is no group work. I've heard some programs are heavy with group work and I really can't stand it.?

Nursedebir: I know it’s very disappointing ?....I have been talking to the advisor for the RN to MSN program (Jess D.)...she confirmed that RN to MSN students don’t start masters classes until 3rd semester. The bridge classes each take up one semester (though maybe the second one could be taken in summer?)

I have no experience in psych nursing beyond working with patients in outpatient medical clinics. It’s a personal passion/interest to specialize in depression/anxiety from personal experience and building my business around that. But I’m certainly interested in all diagnosis/research of mental health as a whole.

Msmedic68w: I hear you!!! I’ve always felt like group work was such a waste of effort/resources because it doesn’t translate into the real world.

Has anyone that accessed the FB group know if they address how much of that to expect?

dcabrera: I am in the Facebook page but didn't really find out a lot of information about groups. I can imagine groups will be challenging in an online setting. I talked with my advisor this week and felt like I have a little more information than before. Still waiting to hear about financial aid award. Ready to get this started though.

Did everyone get the emails about their academic plan and handbook? I tried logging in like the instructions said and wound up calling support. Support staff said they are sending that out too soon as we are not setup in the system yet and to wait to hear from our adviser to login. Anyone have this happen too?

@nursedebir

Yes, I got that paper like a month ago. They said once they send out packets and we are actually enrolled in classes then it would activate.

Hi!

Has anyone signed up for classes yet? I logged in and there was not much in terms of instructions but I found the registration section and picked the 2 classes we are starting with.

I noticed people were signed up so I did too, but it was strange because there were no instructions regarding this.

@kaylee.

I just finished registering tonight. I was having a hard time logging in but it wound up being an issue with my browser. What track are you on? I am doing the RN to MSN.

I thought it was a little odd too that we were not told dates registration would be open. When I talked to IT support he said sometimes in the nursing programs you can’t even select your courses because you have a specific track already decided for you. Hopefully I did the right thing. ?

It looks like the sections of the courses are 15 students each. That seems promising that they value small class size.

One other question: are u all planning on buying hard copies of the books or e-texts? I am so used to e-books nowadays and the idea of lugging around massive books seems prohibitive in terms of studying on the go. I actually have an older version of the patho book and it is insanely massive. I bought it 6 years ago as a new grad to learn but never ended up using it because of the size.

I think I am going to utilize the available technology and go for the e-texts.

Hello All!

I was having troubles logging in with the limited information sent to me. I had to call IT which was soooo helpful. I am exploring the portal now. I have already filled for FA, awaiting that reward. I am also about to register for research and patho. I have used the patho book in my under graduate, I love the book it is really good. I am going to order all hard copies for myself. I like to put my hands on the book, write in it and highlight and all of that. I will also get the eBook as well to just have as a more accessible research while on the go or at work.

I was considering renting the text books from Amazon. I found everything I needed for a third of the cost. I have rented text books from them before and it was pretty simple to do. I do like having the eBook as an option when I am on the go and for searching topics, especially for papers.

I also was able to get logged in finally and was exploring a little, it is totally different from my last program. I felt like I finally figured out my last system in the last 2 semesters.

I wonder how long it will take for FA reward to get out to us?
