I've had two parents yell at me in the past two days - one because I wouldn't let her son sit in my office and do crossword puzzles, and the other because I told her child I wasn't going to call mom because he didn't have s/sx of infection and we both knew mom wouldn't come pick him up if he didn't.
I am so worn down from trying so hard to help these kids - vision, hearing, AN referals that all go ignored. Asthma action plans not returned, but the kids comes in from PE once a week with "feeling tight" and wanting her med (which btw is here at school, but with no order...). And what do I get in return? I'm not doing enough. I'm bugging the parent unnecessarily. I'm just not good enough. Sigh...
All I have to do is get thru today and tomorrow and I'm off for a week. COME ON, FRIDAY, 2P!!!!

Sorry this happened to you...I find it's just easier to call the parent if the student insists on it. I do however in front of the student, tell the parent if I feel there is no reason for the student not to stay in school. Have a great Spring break...I have to wait till April:nurse:

We are probably not going to get our Spring Break becasue of snow days. We have to use Spring Break as make-up days. UGH....

I would not continue bugging the parent to obtain the order, but I would call them to come administer the inhaler every time their kid feels "tight". Eventually, they will obtain that order!! It's so frustrating with some parents... but you can only do so much!! THEY have to take some responsibility too!!
Breathe .... summer is just around the corner!!

Our Spring Break isn't until the end of April - but YES, I'm looking forward to it.
This new job has a huge learning curve full of bureaucracy

Hope you had a nice break. I am presently doing school nursing. I am surprised that anyone in the school administration is saying this order is "unnecessary." Where I come from, nobody would say that because it's an easy lawsuit. Let me just tell you that if ANYTHING goes wrong, you're going to be the one left holding the proverbial bag because everyone involved is going to say, "You knew you were there to only give meds with an order." I have learned the hard way that I am better off erring on the side of protecting myself. If mom won't bring in the order, then she can be called to bring the med (whatever it is) to school. Nevertheless, the school board will be sued as well and you might want to explain that to them so that they see clearly that an order is absolutely necessary. It covers them and you.

I feel your pain too! I am in the same boat. I say you refer this to your SST (student support team) if you have one or to your principal. We all work collaboratively for the good of the student, I refer hard cases to the admin, when I did everything (talked to the parents, email, telephone calls.. but still nothing happened) to no avail.
Good luck on your spring break! I'm savoring mine right now! 6 more days to go.... :-(
