Who Was Nurse Rachett????

Nurses General Nursing

Please enlighten me. I have seen references to Nurse Rachett as being some kind of evil torturer. Sorry I am so late to make this discovery so please be patient with me. Thanks.

Wasn't the harm she inflicted on her patients psychological for the most part? I too saw the movie in it's orginal release. Haven't seen it since so I can't remember the details.

oh yes...

i will never forget when billy had just spent a night with a certain girl, and ratched met him in the hallway (as billy scurried to get dressed)

billy had been 'cured' to the point of no longer stuttering.

yet after nurse ratched said a few scathing words to him, he ended up killing himself.

i will never forget demon seed, rn.

I occ. work at a camp where a lot of parents are from the movie industry so of course I picked the camp name Nurse Ratched. It's been my camp name for years now and I have memorized several lines as many of them worked on the movie and we banter back and forth when they drop off their kids. I normally would not pick a name that was demeaning to nursing but in this case it was appropriate.

The campers have no clue as to who Nurse Ratched is...I tell them someday they will figure it out!

The book is much better than the movie...

the term "nurse ratchet" is symnomous for a nurse who has i"ts my or highway" attitude, she belittles younger nurses and subordinates. the nurse is ussually older and with many yrs of nsg under their belt. also may show s/sx of burn out as well facing issues with the response of not wavering from the rules even for slight descrepencies. i did a paper on nurse burn out and thats what much of the literature describes ratchet to be.

She caused at least 1 patient death that I recall.

As I recall, Nurse Ratched was kind to the newer nurse who worked with her. She tormented the patients, though, and seemed to enjoy doing it. At least, that was my impression. I didn't find her to be burned out at all. She was just too strict with patients and cruel to them.

Sorry to be a little nit-picky here but her last name is Ratched.:specs:

Thanks. :coollook:

Yep - great book, great movie.

A girlfriend bought me the novel and the VHS tape last year because I have worked Psych for years and had never seen it. I agree that the book was better although the acting in the movie was excellent. Actually, I had a lot of compassion for Nurse Ratched. She was in worse shape than the patients.

Oh, dear. Some of us are old enough to have actually seen the movie's original release at the theatre!

Amen sister!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFLMBO!!!!

To top it off, our psych instructor had us watch it and identify the various psychosis and neurosis of the "patients" and nurse Rachett!:uhoh3::chuckle
