Who has taken chemistry and anatomy together?

Published

I just found out that I will be able to take chemistry this fall at a convenient location near work, and I will also be taking anatomy at my regular school to keep my registration seniority.

Who has taken these classes together and gone well/gotten A's? Are there any tips you can offer? Luckily, my job has a lot of down time, so I will be taking advantage of that.

I did this Fall '09 got two A's. A&P1 was tough because I had an awful teacher and I had to eat, sleep, breathe this class. Chemistry was better and I enjoyed it far more, and could skip a day or two of review to put more time into A&P if need be. Doable.

Very doable. I had Micro and Chem together a couple years ago and got an A in Micro, but got a C+ in Chem. It wasnt because the class was hard but because I suck at Chem and didnt take advantage of the help that was offered.

But yeah, its no big deal. I wouldnt advise taking more than two science courses together though, ever.

I just took AP1 and Chem together, and got an A in both class. It was tough because I had to study Anatomy a bit every day just to keep up. Chem wasn't as intensive but my teacher wasn't the best, so I did a lot of self-teaching with the text at home. It's doable, but just know it'll be a busy semester - a lot of homework at night and on the weekend. good luck!

I took Anatomy and Chemistry together and got A's for both as well. It was doable. You are in class longer and more days per week because they both have lab classes though(at least in my college). I recommend reviewing the material from that day and the day before when you are home so you do not have to cram for either subject. If you stay on top of everything, believe me, you will have no problems and likely will be able to enjoy these classes. It is important in Chemistry especially to have the fundamentals down, because everything sort of builds on top of the lectures/labs of the first month or so. For Anatomy, do not be afraid to ask your professor what he will be putting on your exam, because if you try to learn every single detail in the book you will get burnt out quickly. And the opposite is true for Chem, lol. The more you have memorized, like the polyatomic ions, oxidation numbers, etc, the easier it will be to follow along. Good luck, taking these courses at the same time is really not too bad at all.

I will be taking evening classes. If I study for ten hours on the weekend, how many hours do you think I should study each day?

I did but I took o-chem w/ anatomy. o-chem is easier than general chem though lol.

isnt chem a pre-req for anatomy, physio, and micro?

At least one hour for each subject. The goal is prevent cramming at all costs. Remember, you need this information for your nursing courses (well, A&P at least), so try to create a habit of reviewing your lecture notes and texts so you can remember the most important things permanently.

And at my college we do not need chemistry before A&P, but I do know there are some schools that do.

Last spring I took 18 credits, 8 being chem and A&P 2, and I got a 4.0 that semester. I studied alot of course. Only my A&P 2 and maternity instructors ever gave an idea of time to study "for an A" and each suggested 11-13 hours prior to the test. I usually did that and got the A's. So yes, it's very doable :) Best of luck to you

At my school general chemistry (and biology) is a pre-req for anatomy. Organic and biochem are also pre-reqs for physiology and pathophysiology.

I think you can get through anatomy without chemistry, but definitely think you need that chemistry for both physiology and pathophysiology. I know a lot of schools do A&P rather than separating the anatomy and physiology. I cannot imagine doing physiology without a chemistry background. So much is dependent upon fluid/electrolytes and acid/base and it really helps to understand that from the chemistry side before applying it to disease states in pathophysiology.

I took anatomy and chem together this past fall. I did horrible with chemistry in high school. (Horrible as in D!) In college, I got an A! Chemistry can be hard or easy depending on who is teaching it so hopefully you luck out. Don't worry too much about chem though because most of your time will be going towards anatomy. The class is hard at times but I also got an A in anatomy and trust me, if I could do it, you can do it! GOOD LUCK!
