I am 47, have NO experience in helah-care, but I am thinking ofgoing into nursing school, with the ultimate goal to ne a Nurse Practitioner.

By the time I finish all the pre-requisites (while working), a may be 50 by the time I can apply to schools.

Anyone else come to the party this late in life with no healthcare background?

I need reassurance!

Well, I FEEL like I am 68. I am really 34. I have seen so many older students at school. I think it is wonderful. Good luck to you!!

One of my good friends graduated in December a few months shy of 52. If you want it, it's doable. She also has a son in elmentary school and worked full time tnrough most of it. She had a lot to juggle. Just make sure you take good care of your health b/c your recovery time from illness and injury is longer than it was when you were twenty.

BTW, I went back when I was twenty-five and was one of the younger members of my class.

I have a friend who is applying for JAN '07 for the nursing program. She's already in her fifties, it's awesome!!

I'm thirty six and when I get my LPN license I'll be 37. I'm the third oldest in my class. I was beginning to feel frustrated, because everyone looks at us with the," Why aren't you a RN yet". Well, I finally was in a place to go for my dreams and didn't want to just sit around another three years on a waiting list to get into RN school. Does anyone think a newbie 41 yr old (that's how old I"ll be when I get my RN) will get hired in an ER?(my dream job)I"m crossing my fingers. I used to feel ashamed I waited so long, but hell!!!!!!! There may be snow on the mountain top when I get my RN licence but there'll be fire down below:devil: (hehehehe!!! or so my husband hopes )

Let's hear it for all of us!!! If nothing else, the older we are when we do it, the more we'll be able to understand how uncomfy those cheap diapers are:lol2:

I don't think its a problem - age that is. However, you may find that in your late 40's and 50's it is much harder to do 12 hour shifts that are nonstop from the time you clock in until you leave. I know I have and that is why I went back to school. Make sure you have other options and good luck everyone!

Specializes in Med-Surg.

We have as many students in our class in their mid to late 40s as we do in their early 20s. I knew someone who went back to school in their 40s and didn't graduate with their MD until into their 50s. Go for your dreams, you're going to be that age anyway, better to be that age with the degree and the job you want than without it.

Specializes in Psych, Med/Surg, LTC.

My mother graduated at 53 years old.

APP, I'll be 47 at the end of July, & starting nursing in September (no previous health care experience, except for an occasional band-aid). I've already read responses to a previous thread I posted by students older than I.
