Who is the oldest Nursing Student here?

Published

I am 47, have NO experience in helah-care, but I am thinking ofgoing into nursing school, with the ultimate goal to ne a Nurse Practitioner.

By the time I finish all the pre-requisites (while working), a may be 50 by the time I can apply to schools.

Anyone else come to the party this late in life with no healthcare background?

I need reassurance!

Specializes in ICU,Oncology,School,.

I will start my first day of NS on my 40th birthday:biggringi

Happy Birthday to me!

we have a lot in common....give me the 12's but the case studies can just kill me! me i will graduate/pinning on the 4th day of may and 5 days later i will be 48.

i am graduating w/students my age, and older, and yes some younger too but it isn't unusual for older student to be in the program, do-able yes, tough? yep:yelclap:

Hi,

I'm in the same situation as you are (47 years old). My problem is getting accepted into any program. My GRE abd Mat scores are not competitive (I attribute this to my age). I graduated Magna Cum Laude, and all of my prerequisites are A's, except for one B. I keep getting denial letters.

So I decided to apply to ADN programs around the area. My goal is to become a FNP, but I do not want to graduate with a walker!

Regards,

Kaystho

Did you notice this thread started in 2006?

BTW, I am 46, will be 47 in Mar and 48 when I graduate. Honestly, I 'resented' the one post that said we older ladies would have trouble with 12 hr shifts. I dare that person to say that to a 50+ nurse still on the floor with 25+ yrs of exp! LOL I may be older, but I am still quite spry! :yeah:

Specializes in Orthopedics.

I have a few people in my class that are in their 50's! I don't think it's ever too late to start nursing. The good thing with nursing is that even after you "retire", it's such a versatile field that there's so much volunteer work you can do. I say go for it!

hello,

i am now 58 years old. i start ns fall 09. i will be 60 when i finish. but then i will be 60 in two years anyway. right? :yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

am i the oldest?

Underpaid Nurse,

RE: "I'm thirty six and when I get my LPN license I'll be 37. I'm the third oldest in my class. I was beginning to feel frustrated, because everyone looks at us with the," Why aren't you a RN yet". Well, I finally was in a place to go for my dreams and didn't want to just sit around another three years on a waiting list to get into RN school. Does anyone think a newbie 41 yr old (that's how old I"ll be when I get my RN) will get hired in an ER?(my dream job)I"m crossing my fingers. I used to feel ashamed I waited so long, but hell!!!!!!! There may be snow on the mountain top when I get my RN licence but there'll be fire down below:devil:"

I'm 47, just graduated last December, and just finished my first week of new grad orientation in the EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT!! Go for your dream. It's possible.

Good luck!!

I'll begin my first semester in LVN School this August. I'm male, and I'll be 53 when school starts. Self employed most of my life. I've received some wonderful nursing care over the years. I always admired nurses but said, "I could never do that." For years I have asked every nurse I met what their story was.

I was wrong about my ability. I've done 3 courses with a 4.0 average in Summer Session and I'll finish my CNA course and be licensed for that before school starts.

I started to do this in 2006, but was offered another good job in business, so I sold out again. Now that industry is in the tank! Served me right. This time I've kept my resume off the net. I'm married to a wonderful woman who's told me to do this for a long time, and here we go!

12 hour days?......................Part time work! Like I said, I've spent most of my life self employed.

I decided to be a LVN. It makes sense for me. I grabbed the average LVN pay and the average RN pay in this area from Salary.com and put it in Excel to find that it takes 8 years to recover the tuition and lost income just to make up the difference! I can help a lot of people in 8 years.

Specializes in nursing family members with rare disease.

I am 90% sure I am going to start an LVN program nights in August. I have a "great" but not fulfilling job in engineering that I will be eligible to early retire from in a couple of years at 55, and I want something for a second career that floats my boat. I have been taking care of family members for 25 years, so I think I know what I am getting myself in for. 12 hour days are fine, I have often done those and have a lot of energy. And I am psyched about starting something challenging, now that I have an empty nest!

Specializes in long term care, geropsych.

I'm 61 and will graduate in the Spring of 2012 with an Associate Degree as an RN.

Specializes in on the fence about nursing.

42 years old. I initially started working on the prereqs for nursing in '07. I started clinicals in 2010 in an ASN program...looking for a local ASN/BSN program to continue. Please note the nursing specialty....if I do continue, might change that up to Women's Health/Maternity.

There is nothing about nursing and working that cannot be done.

I am in my first semester and I am 44 :)
