I just had to ask that question? I am not trying to start anything...I see a lot of threads about how much RN's make.... That makes me wonder who is in Nursing ONLY for the money?
I had several fellow students who openly admitted they only wanted to go into nursing for the money and job security. I don't see them lasting very long unless they are lucky enough to find a nursing position that doesn't involve any direct patient care. If you don't truly like people and enjoy helping them in their time of need, nursing isn't really the best field to go into in my humble opinion.

Yea...How can I forget job security...That's a good one...
I am pretty sure there is no other profession with a bigger obsession to prove to everybody how little we care for the money, and how compasionate we are. Well. certainly I love my job and find it much more fullfilliing at a personal level than any of my previous jobs. Also I am telling you I would not do it if that means for me struggling in paying my bills or putting food in my children plates.
Besides, where is the great salary? Compare to what? Flipping burgers? Sure! but A lawyer? A doctor? Not quite.
Also, the whole "calling" and "love for the people" it is very good but that should never be instead of being professional. I don't care if someone cares or not for me while taking care of my health if he or she are professional all the time.
Again I love my job and work with the people. But "people" a vague term. People includes human being that have little or no manners, that are intentionally offensive, noisy, demanding beyond my duty and what they should expect and definitelky deserve, recless, eveil and plain stupid. I encount thses sort of "people" everyday and believe me puttong up with them makes my paycheck very little. The only thing that makes it better is the other people just the opposit that, thank God, I also encounter every day.
I am a CNA in nursing school. CNA work is grueling and the pay is very low. However, I became a CNA to make sure that this was the right field for me. I chose nursing because I enjoy caring for others. I have been a CNA for 2.5 years and if I did not want to be a nurse I surely would not stay in this job. The money for an RN is good but not great. My sister has been an RN since 1988 and many of her jobs are grueling often 12 hour shifts without lunch because she is so busy. So if someone chooses nursing only for the money they will be unhappy.
I care about the people I take care of. But I am not Mother Theresa of Kolkata. I'm a poor miserable sinner who has bills to pay and personal needs. I also would be rethinking my job and the training I went through to get my nursing license if I discovered I was being paid the same amount of money for the work and liability, as, say, a McDonald's fry cook.
Money is a huge factor for me choosing this. I will be making more w/ my Nursing degree than all my buddies with their business and liberal arts degrees. I can also go on to grad school and make a whole lot more money if I choose. Nursing allows alot of advancement and upward mobility, with constant job security. I'm no Florence Nightingale...I want to have a nice house and car, and help sick people at the same time. Shrug.

I agree. Usually students like that don't even make it through the pre-reqs. They think "I'm going to be a nurse because they make a lot of money" and the rigors of pre-reqs and reality weed them out and they go into real estate, computers, business, or something else.
Those who have a good heart for helping people, but yet still go into to make some money and be financially secure are usually the one's who make it through. The rigors of nursing school, along with the physical realities of dealing with sick and infirm people (i.e. poop, vomit and sputum) tend to weed out a lot of people that don't have a secondary motivation besides finding a stable career. With money being the ONLY motivating factor, it's hard to deal with all of that.

I totally enjoy what I do. Helping to bring a new life into the world is the most rewarding "job".. nothing can compare. I feel very blessed to be a part of it. I take pride in supporting a family thru their birth plan/exprience.
With that being said, to clarify, I do it for the money cuz.. I have lots of debt b/c of going back to school so I COULD have this job! The college I attended was 2 hours from my home, so it nixed any thoughts of school & work, there werent enough hours in the day, if i wanted to also see my children and have any iota of sanity. I also have no hospitals in this area that offer those amazing sign on bonuses nor do they pay off your student loans.. so yep.. bring on the paycheck.
Someday when my debt is whittled down, I will be able to say ' no, I only work b/c I want to" :)
