Who is in Nursing for the money?

Published

I just had to ask that question? I am not trying to start anything...I see a lot of threads about how much RN's make.... That makes me wonder who is in Nursing ONLY for the money?

This thread was intended specifically for a friend....She made the comment that she would do it for the money....I asked her what about the care of the patients...Her response...I dare not repeat...Thanks all who replied and I still don't think it helped her...Oh well...

I agree wtih Ruby, the overwhelming majority of us have good hearts, and we need a paycheck.

I've found people in it only to collect a paycheck are lousy nurses. I've come across a few agency night shift workers who are only trying to make the most amount of money they can, and they are lousy and lazy nurses. It's interesting to me that those who want the most money, don't really want to earn it.

But those kind of people, and people like your friend are few and far between thank goodness, but they are out there.

You'll also find that many of those that are nurses only for the money are the ones that pick up tons of extra shifts and therefore end up burning out quickly.

Ok...what I am saying is...she meant that she could care less about patient care....

Is this friend working as a nurse right now?

Nope...but she says she plans too...which I don't think is a very wise decision... Her theory is most nurses could care less about patients and are ONLY in it for a paycheck...I told her I had just the place and people to prover her wrong... Like I told her...speak for yourself because everyone is not cruel...

Everyone gets a job and/or furthers their education for better income. It doesn't have to be nursing, it could have been anything else, including jobs that pay a lot more and are a lot less stressful than nursing. So to ask "Who is in it for the money?" is kind of asking a loaded question. However, there are reasons that people pick nursing over those other jobs, which leads me to believe that no one truly does it just for the money. However, if you hate your job bad enough to state that if you could go to school for something else, that you would, I think you need to get out of the nursing field. If you're not happy with your career, it will show to your pt.s and those you work with. I personally would not want anyone who hated their job dealing with me, as I would be a part of something they hate.

You understand, though, that you aren't proving anything by bringing her here, right? Think about it - Of course there are nurses out there that could care less about patients and are only in it for a paycheck. But do you really think that those nurses would spend their free time visiting a nurses discussion forum?

Yes. I am starting nursing school in a few weeks, and if I didn't need the $, I wouldn't be doing this. It is going to be extremely stressful on me, and my husband, and my kids. But I'm doing it, because my husband is a pastor and is not able to work another job because of health problems. We have 5 children and are basically broke all the time. We have no savings or retirement, and our house is way too small.

But, if my husband made good money, I certainly wouldn't be doing this. I would be staying home with my children.

That's not to say that I'm not interested in nursing, though. I have always been very interested in science and medical stuff.

Yes I knew that...But I also knew that I could get honest and real opinions here without sugar coating....

I went into nursing to become a midwife (back in 1990 you had to be a nurse first). I didn't get into midwifery 2 years in a row so I gave up.

I certainly didn't go into nursing for the money but I do stay in nursing for the money and the lifestyle it offers me.

Does the fact I stay in nursing for the money affect my patient care...in no way whatsoever.
