  1. I had my first at the hospital yesterday and made several mistakes. I'm such a goofball and wondering if nursing just isn't for me. Here are my mistakes: 1) I was going to give an injectiona nd almost forgot to use an alcohol swab. My instructor was standing there and reminded me and I used it and then, I didn't know there was a cap on the end of it. I looked like such an idiot! I didn't set up anythign for garbage so I kept having to hand my instructor all of the trash. 2) I am a germaphobe, big time and someone asked me to go change a pillow case for a patient that had betadine on it. I DIDN'T USE GLOVES!! I realized this after I did it and immediately left the room and used the hand sanitizer. I have a paper cut that I got the night before, as well. Where was my brain? Now I'm freaking out a little bit that I caught something. How could I forget this? Maybe I'm not cut out for this. Everyone else in my group seemed to know what they were doing but I have had no medical experience before and felt totally lost. Especially with the no-glove thing.. please tell me if I'm going to be okay.
  2. Oops... sorry about that!
  3. I'm sure you wouldn't argue with me when I say breastfed babies are healthier. Yes, getting colds and different viruses help to build the immune system and can help give the immune system "practice" in order to effectively fight off the bigger guns (like cancer) later down the road. My kids are homeschooled and stay at home and yet they still get sick several times a year, but so far, have had no trouble recovering and have only needed antibiotics once, each (my oldest is 11.) The problem with vaccines is that they do bypass normal body mechanisms and because of this have been implicated in various autoimmune diseases such as cancer and allergies.
  4. This is totally false. Clean living conditions was a major factor in infectious disease control. Did any of you guys attend the lecture about Florence Nightingale? "The sanitary, nutrition, and basic facilities in the battlefield hospitals were poor at best. Evenutally she was given the task to organize and improve the quality of the sanitation facilities. As a result, the mortality rate at the Barracks Hospital in Scutari, Turkey was reduced from 42.8% to 2.2% in 6 months." This is from my Fundamentals book. From my Microbiology book: "Scientists have developed vaccines to prevent infections and drugs to treat them once they have become established. Moreover, we have made dramatic progress in preventing infectious disease through public hygiene, such as water treatment, sewage treatment, and better living conditions." (My bold and italics.)
  5. To the OP, I totally understand your decision to delay vax. If you are concerned about bringing things home, I would figure out: 1. Which diseases you are likely to come in contact with; 2. think about their method of transmission and how easily they are transmitted (from the patient to you, and then you to your family... the likelihood is soooooo small) Also, remember that many adults are not vaxed for these diseases (like your spouse), and you wouldn't be concerned about transmitting diseases to him, would you? Use the same rationale for your children. I wish some of the people on here would show more respect.. she's not coming here looking for advice on whether or not to vaccinate her children. And for ANYONE to imply that her children are some sort of "breeding ground" for horrible diseases is absurd. Unvaxed/delayed vax kids (especially when they are breastfed, preferably for the first 1-2 years and stay at home [no daycare]--read Dr. Bob Sears's new Vaccine Book) are considerably healthier than the average formula fed, vaxed on schedule daycare children.
  6. Yes. I am starting nursing school in a few weeks, and if I didn't need the $, I wouldn't be doing this. It is going to be extremely stressful on me, and my husband, and my kids. But I'm doing it, because my husband is a pastor and is not able to work another job because of health problems. We have 5 children and are basically broke all the time. We have no savings or retirement, and our house is way too small. But, if my husband made good money, I certainly wouldn't be doing this. I would be staying home with my children. That's not to say that I'm not interested in nursing, though. I have always been very interested in science and medical stuff.
  7. I'll be starting SMCC's ADN program in the fall.
  8. Yes, I have figured this out in the past-- some questions can have more than one "correct" answer. The problem is, that this professor is not willing to go back through and check the lab quizzes. It's very frustrating!
  9. Well, in my online classes (through a community college), the A & P tests are open book, except for proctored midterms and finals. The lab quizzes are open book and there are no proctored exams. I like it, but I think I would learn a lot more doing a live dissection.
  10. I am taking A & P II online and I bombed my last two lab tests. I am having the hardest time figuring out the labelling exercises. I have Mosby's (Kevin T. Patton) Lab Manual. I am looking at the upper digestive tract (mouth) right now and I can't tell what is supposed to be tongue or soft palate or... agh! I am going crazy.
