At the ED I work at only docs, PAs or FPs do it. Nurses, never.

Nurses and paramedics who are checked off (i.e. starts 3 EJs and is checked off by the MD) can do them. Techs can start IVs, but not EJs.
EJs are great. Very easy to do.

Same policy as Fribblet,....any nurse who's been trained and observed. BTW,.they are usually easier than peripherals.
how did you get started? I know you need a policy, procedure?

I would think it is a money thing. The doc does the EJ so the client is charged more.

IV therapy and nurses who have been trained and checked off do the EJs in our small hospital.

The MDs did those in the ER where I worked.

I have only known a doctor to place an external jugular. I know I for one do not want anyone else perfoming this on me without alot of training and experience.
