Which is it? Coolest and most glamorous nursing jobs

Nurses General Nursing

I'm betting that this particular post will cause a stir. But I'm curious which nursing profession is considered to be the coolest or most exciting or over all glamorous job in the nursing field. Is it Flight Nursing, TCVPO, Cath Lab, ED, etc.

Don't ask me why I'm just wondering.

I am so tired this type of posts.

I am a rehab nurse. Yes, you nurses who work in ER and ICU may save the persons live, but you know what what? I am the person that gives them their life back.

We rehab nurses are the ones the get the pts bladder and bowel control back. We take the person who was a hoywr lift to person who can get up with minimal assist.

We get the pts from being totally dependent on help to being independent.

My job is not glamourous. It's not excitingly.

But I am very proud of what me and my colleagues do.

I worjed acute care all of my career. I always hated having patients stuck on my floor that just needed rehab. I felt like it was helpless and they just withered until they died.

Then my sister became an OT. She did a rotation at a hospital that just did rehab. I got to visit her there and meet a few of the patients in passing and several of the staff. The one patient I spoke with was ecstatic about how much he had recovered and talked about moving from a wheelchair to a walker to just his cane after his stroke. He was so thankful.

The nurses were so passionate about what they did, I with many being specialty certified in rehab.

They had so much specialized equipment I have never seen before.

It really opened my eyes to a new appreciation of rehab and showed me how wrong my conceptions were.

Macawake - IDK why, but I have always pictured you as a tanned, muscled young man in a Hawaiian shirt...holy paradigm shift...

Specializes in Hospice, corrections, psychiatry, rehab, LTC.
I have a theory. My observation is that most of the "which is the coolest/most respected area of nursing" posts are from men. Do you guys who are preoccupied by that, feel emasculated by being a nurse, so you need to be in the coolest, most "manly" area of nursing possible?

I'm a guy, and I agree with this. I notice that a lot of my male colleagues, especially those new to the profession, speak with a lot of superlatives about their work. I remember reading a post a while back in the Men in Nursing forum, where the guy bragged about the "awesome" care that he gave. He was about six months out of school. My thought was that you barely know what you're doing six months in - at least that was the case with me.

I don't know of any nursing job that I would consider "glamorous," and, in my experience, "excitement" experienced in nursing is usually not the good kind of excitement ...

My husband is a nurse, too. He works in hospice and palliative care. His favorite part of the job is petting people's dogs and holding little old ladies' hands.

Of course, if he were the type to feel emasculated by being a nurse, I wouldn't be married to him. Now that I'm the primary breadwinner, we've also contemplated him working part-time and being a housewife/stay-at-home-dad.

Specializes in Transitional Nursing.

I'm wicked glamorous with my pulse ox hanging around my neck, pureed food on my scrubs and black under my eyes because my makeup is running off my face d/t extreme heat working with older folks.

My 30 patients love my pony tail or messy bun and I wear sexy ted hose, too!

This is such a specific preconception!

From the outside looking in I'd have to say I always admire the flight nurses an awful lot! They show up at our ICU to transport patients in their flight suits with tons of equipment they manager to pack into a very compact package and are always so professional! Could I do their job? I seriously doubt I could even come close! But they look pretty cool to me!.:)

:roflmao: :lol2: :lol2:

I just about split my sides laughing over here...

Now I'm left wondering exactly what it is in my posts that evokes images of Hawaiian shirts... Scary thought  :lol2: I need therapy after reading this :)

The muscled part is accurate, I spend way too much time at the gym lifting weights. The tan depends on the season since I live close to the North Pole. I'm definitely female :)

Well she is a badass. ;)

:lol2:

It's official, my sides just split :)

I'm sure that being a badass while wearing an Hawaiian shirt defies some law of nature... It simply can't be done.

Guys, I am literally having a giggle fit right now. I have no idea what in Macawake's posts gave me that image, but I have had it for years. Isn't it funny how we project images, personalities, etc onto the people we like and respect (and sometimes dislike) on here?

Maybe that's idea for a hilarious thread.

I have very specific pictures in my mind of long time posters, like Ruby Vee, Ixchel, NOADLS (where the heck is he, anyway? I picture him as a cross between Professor Snape and Keanu Reeves...) Esme, Music in My Heart, Klone....

Maybe sometimes I just feel like I know you guys. (Cue sappy chick flick music.)

ETA: Sorry for hijacking your post, OP. I couldn't help it.

Guys. When I first put on my "real nurse" uniform for my internship, not the school scrubs but how I looked up at myself for the first time in the full length mirror and the thought stole over me that looked just like the RN's I saw and not a student in ugly scrubs and white kicks, I felt pretty close, maybe as close as it could be, to feeling glamorous! Then not long after that, I gave a tap water enema for the first time. But anyway I still felt very cool on the med-surg unit.
