Where are they?

Published

I am an RN in NY. I had a nice interview with an agency that places RNs per diem at schools. My husband asked why don't you apply to the schools for a permanent position and I replied, "I have never ever seen a posting for openings anywhere." Where does one find these positions? Do I have to look up each school district individually?

I think the dept of education is he place to look.

BOCES might be one avenue for you.

Also most postings only go up in the summer - while there might be a few openings during the school year, you'd have to be checking daily to see them because they get filled quickly. Most school personnel will stick it out until the end of a school year and then transfer jobs or retire, so June/July is when postings go up for the next year.

And yes, I had to look up every school district around me for their postings. Some do it through the city department of health, others have their own HR site, a few others post them on Indeed.com, etc.

As folks have mentioned, school district sites are go places to look for postings. However, you may want to check out SchoolSpring.com. Educational job postings, you can filter out to school nursing jobs specifically. I found the posting for the job I am currently at there.

CAll your local school nurse!!! Get an idea of what is happening in your area. Check in with your state school nurse list serve, there are often job postings that come across there as well. Good Luck!

NutmeggeRN is right on. You need to make yourself known by the school nurses. Many times the job posting is just a formality to fulfill the HR requirement; the decision to fill the vacancy has already been made prior to the posting.

Great! Thanks. I found a government website (local) that many but not all of the districts use for online applications and job postings. I will call the RN's in my children's district to find out what I can do from there. Thank you.

I would also suggest calling all your local districts and asking if they are looking for School Nurse subs. This is a great way to get them to know you and sets you up perfectly for when a F/T position becomes available. My job was advertised in a local paper only and that's common for by me. Where are you in NY? Maybe someone on here can help you get in to their district if you're close.

Our district has an open application. Although, they may not be hiring at the time....you can still apply for future jobs.
