When 2 New Grads are hired on the same unit

Published

For those of you who were hired as a new grad on a unit at the same time as one or more other new grads, how was the relationship between the new grads? Was it supportive or competitive?

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

It was supportive--we both graduated in the same class :) So we weren't starting to get to know each other from ground zero.

But psych really wasn't her calling so when something in her desired field opened up she left for it. Meanwhile, I realized I had found my calling and stayed. And we're both happy.

Got along just fine with the other New Grad on my unit. We started within 2 months of each other. Both love our jobs and we work well together.

We do it all the time in our unit, and for the most part I think they've been supportive of each other. It gets more competitive later, when issues like who gets trained first for open heart recovery come up, but other than that it's a good environment.

it was supportive. not competitive in the least bit.

I work at an ALF and my experience was a nightmare! I as a newgrad had to train another new grad. Needless to say there were many errors and I told my stupervisor that I wont do that ever again!

There were four of us hired at the same time, and it's been great having a few other people who are going through exactly what I am, at the same time as me. We even managed to get together for breakfast after work one morning to celebrate making it through our first year.

We were supportive. She had started a few weeks earlier and had no nursing experience. I had 5 years of LPN experience. I was overwhelmed at first, so I knew it had to be tough for her.

it was great having another new nurse around, we both shared similar fears and concerns and ended up supporting each other

My experience was very supportive. I hired on with a new grad almost half my age who had worked as a tech during school. We were the first two of a batch of 6 to begin last summer. She was awesome and knew a lot more than me at the beginning, and was always helpful (and never made me feel stupid - which I did). She went on to days now and I miss her! All of us "new grads" actually work very well together - and seem to like each other as well!

competitive in my first work environment (even though i was not competing) and supportive in my second work environment. the first was competitive because i graduated with most of the new grads. although the others were not the best student nurses, like me they were good techs and externs. despite this they competed with me at every junction. fortunately, i was able to get a new job as a new grad less then a year of working med surg and left.

when i started my second job i became surrounded by people who did not know me or my reputation in nursing school, so they did not compete with me. i received a lot of support from the other new grads, despite the experienced nurses trying to pit us against each other. i think the experience nurses fail to divide us because one day the experienced nurses will go after new grad so-and-so and the next day they will go after someone else.

Supportive. There's really nothing to compete against on our unit as the training is the same for everyone pretty much. She started two months before me so it's been especially nice for me having someone who was just where I am and can relate.
