When do hospitals do most of their hiring?

I believe that each region is different. I live in the southeastern United States. Our busy season is from November to April. Thus you're pretty much guaranteed to be hired during this season. However, most new grad programs start in May & August.

Depends on the type of institution as well.

State/federal institutions might be more predictable (as is the nature of govt), but private locations will all be significantly different.

With the economy right now, id imagine that most places are going to be all over the place with forced retirements layoffs etc

Most facilities have yearly budgets for nursing staff. However, they generally part things out per quarter. Thinking logically, Jan-March and July-Sept are hot months because they coincide with graduation times. November and December are pretty dead months because often folks are on vacation. The hospital needs educators, HR, nurses on the floor working to hire and train people.

Most hospitals make the bulk of their income off of the elderly, for obvious reasons. Depending upon your location the annual migration of the old occurs at different times. For example, in states which have a winter season the old typically migrate out of state sometime around Thanksgiving or Christmas, to return sometime around April meaning that winter is a slow time.

In my location, Arizona, our busiest time is during the winter as everyone from the North and Midwest migrates down for the winter. This means that generally our hiring season is in the fall to early winter.

There are two types of 'hiring': Programmatic & Operational. Programmatic means positions that are tied to a specific activity or initiative. These positions will be hired according to the timeline that is attached to that event/activity. For instance, new grad program positions are hired to-coincide with the schedule for graduation & beginning of that program (internship, externship, residency, etc). There may also be other events that trigger hiring... like opening a new department or expanding an existing one.

Operational hiring - is the process needed to maintain the budgeted positions. So, when a vacancy occurs, someone is hired to fill the position. This is a continuous process.

In many areas of practice there is always a need for experienced nurses. We have trouble finding experienced OR nurses. Just now we are expanding so we are hiring, but once that settles down we will probably go back to whenever someone quits or gets fired we hire a replacement. We do not create new FTE's unless necessary, regardless of budget

Basically hospitals hire when there is an position is opened (whether an increase in FTE due to expansion or increased census, staff resigns, or staff terminated ( someone leaves a job) ) and a qualified candidate applies. There is no set time like hospitals hire in January, May. & October; with few exceptions (such as residencies or new grad programs). Unlicensed assistive personnel & ancillary staff are hired when needed.

In LTCs the turnover is high - I think they are always hiring. It is more difficult to get hospital jobs but not impossible.
