What's the weirdest baby name?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!

Pandora is a Greek name. Sounds a whole lot better than Taffy to me.

Taffy is actually a traditional Welsh name, but it's usually reserved for men, and is related to the name "David."

Is it a nickname for David, or would someone just put Taffy on a boy's birth certificate? In the US, a boy named Taffy would probably get whupped at recess.

For a girl, Taffy sounds like the name of a stripper.

Doesn't strike me as a good legal name for either.

I agree, but I was just thinking about the legend involving Pandora opening a box and releasing all the evils of human life. I have a niece named Cassandra, another Greek name from mythology--not the prophetess who was never believed, however, but named for a relative.

I guess I spent too much time reading as a kid.

I knew both of those references, so I guess I read too much, too. :D

Pandora also let Hope out of the box.

Cassandra got a bum deal all the way around.

I thought of Taffy as referring to hair color, but I still wouldn't name a BOY Taffy!

In the LTC place I work at, I used to take care of a guy named "Taffe" - pronounced like "Taffy". He was ex military and I'm sure no one kicked his ass at recess. :chair::chair:

No Taffy is a slang term for a welshman used by other countries in the UK. It's origin is the river Taff which is in south Wales and commonly used within military circles. My BIL was known as Taff Jones in his unit, David (or Dewi) would be known as Dai

Ah, but maybe they did give him grief when he was a young lad, and it spurred him on to join the military. :D

In Welsh, David is pretty much "Dafydd." So Taffy is a nickname for David. (Sounds like Dafydd in a Welsh accent) and at some point became an acceptable given name for girls. Not sure if it was ever a given name for boys, but it's kinda like the Welsh version of "Davey."

And by the way, even though I went to all of the trouble of explaining this, I think in the English speaking US, Taffy is an awful choice for a name for either gender!

But I love to eat it! ;)

Dafydd or Dewi would be correct. The patron saint of Wales is " Dewi Sant" or translates as Saint David

Never known a girl to be called Dafydd, or Taffy

Taffy is not a nickname for David, read my above post for clarification.

I am Welsh, still live here in deepest darkest Welsh valley and Welsh people do not call men called David Taffy
