What's your favorite part of your job? Least favorite? This is for everyone, doing all kinds of nursing! I would love to hear. :)
I love it when I get an indication from my patient that s/he is happy or comfortable. The patient is generally not responsive, so when s/he smiles spontaneously, it makes my day. I hate the person to person conflict that sometimes occurs that detracts from optimal patient care and well being. We are all adults here, so it would be nice if everyone acted in a mature manner, and kept interpersonal conflict to a minimum. It is not necessary.
Favorite: discharges... I love putting together info packets, doing the teaching, walking the patient out the door... it's a happy thing... they're better... yay!!!
Least favorite: admissions... I hate them and feel a part of me die when I have to do them... always somebody with 50 meds that they can't tell me the doses, practice polypharmacy and have no clue what they took last and when... they're sick... boo!!!
Favorite: Same thing that got me into nursing which is helping someone when they are at their worst. Whether worst means needing a lot of help with ADLs, a code situation or someone who just needs an ear.
Hate: The boring senseless stuff, especially the stuff that takes time away from the patients. Stocking carts is a good example. The overly simplistic stuff like getting water pitchers and constantly adjusting everyones room temp.
Favourites:
- Getting a genuine "thank you" at the end of the day from my patients.
- Getting to know my patients, talking with them, and if possible, joke around with them and spread some cheer.
- When I get to send a patient home, healthy and whole and happy. It doesn't always happen where I work.
- On a rare good day, having the time to do a little extra something for my patients.
Least Favourites:
- C. diff. Need I say more?
- The sad stories.
- Spending time doing non-nursing duties because the people hired to do them are "too busy to do it". And, what, I'm not busy with my own duties? >_
