What do young single nurses do on their days off?

Nurses General Nursing Nursing Q/A

I'm a 23 yo new grad who is only working 3 days a week (Friday, sat, sun following my preceptors schedule) and for the 4 days that I'm out of work I don't know what to do with myself! So, what should I do the whole day??

I'm just curious to see what everyone else, on a similar set up, does...

Ideas would be really appreciated! I'm such a loser! Haha, but I'm just so use to working 5days a week! I'm sure u guys understand ?

I think you have the "New Grad Syndrome". Nursing school basically sucked every waking minute of your day for 2 years, so now that you have TIME, you can't remember how you used it before.

Never fear! This will pass, and you will soon learn to lay on the couch, watch TV, goof around, go shopping, out to lunch, cook, etc. It took me a while to unwind after nursing school. I kept thinking I had something to study for.

Good luck!

I'm taking classes for my bachelor's and that keeps me busy. I love to cook so I take my time making great meals. I also love to go the gym and hang out by the pool.

When I was single I lived in a big city (Seattle) and mostly walked the city seeing new things. I would visit a museum or art house or my favorite spending the day in the library reading.

I would also go see movies by myself (my wife thinks that is nuts, but I always liked it). We had a few zoos I would visit now and then also.

Basically since I was new to the city, I explored for 3 months or so.

Hope this helps,

Pat

Do you have any hobbies? I like to read, work in my garden and just relax taking time for myself.

I have the same problem. I have NO social life. I just last month turned 23 and since I was 15 I have been going to school and working. When I got done with school I lasted about 6 months before I enrolled back in school, to get my EMT training. Then I enrolled to get my BSN. Now I am helping my mom run her business. So...........I can't help ya, but I can say good luck.... and if you find something to do in your days off.... let me know....... If/when I get a day off.....I am so gosh darn bored. I sit and stare at the wall, then I get up and help wait tables at my mom's cafe.

I AM PATHETIC............I NEED HELP

?

Oh my goodness! I can't imagine ever being bored! I thank the gods when I get 4 off in a row. That means I can go on a camping trip or go to a concert or go for some day trips or read or shop online or go to the movies (alone, too!) or do some yoga or catch up on email or sleep, cook, and eat or go swimming with friends or find a beach or lake....

I wish I had more days off! But I love my job and love working too!

If I were you, Iwould either go back to school or work extra. Trust me in the future, you would barely have time to do things. I wish I had time like u.

WOW,

I have never had the opportunity to be single. left home at 17 had childeren, divorced, had another boyfriend shortly after ,then married again.

All the things I could do if I was single?

1. Have more friends.

2. Do what I want when I want.

3. SHOP SHOP SHOP

4. Become a mentor.

5. Get more degrees, until I finally get a doctorates.

6. Have more non serious boyfriends.

THE LIST IS ENDLESS

HEY, ENJOY YOUR LIFE. DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

THEN BE REAL HAPPY NURSE.

I'm 23 years old also. While I'm not a nurse yet, I have a crazy work schedule since we are short handed. On my days off, I go to concerts, kayak, read, read, read, read, go on allnurses.com :D, go shopping, clean my house, visit my parents, volunteer for more work hours, go for a drive to nowhere (I know, crazy with the price of gas, but I usually find a place that I like!!), speaking of I like to go restaurant hopping.. a lot! Probably because of working with food. Oh and I love love love to cook.

There is so much more that I do on my days off! But that is just a beginner to get you started. I know it gets lonely sometimes because everyone is working what I call normal-people hours. But we just aren't normal people! LoL! Good luck in finding yourself some hobbies.

I personally feel that it's such a letdown...after having so many days of structured study time and tough tests....NOW I have to fill my time off myself? It's rough.

That being said, I call friends/family, watch TV/movies, clean/do errands, go to the real movies, go out to eat, go for a bike ride, go hike at the state park, fish, if I had 4 days off...I might go out of town for a day or two, just to explore somewhere different.....(overnighters with camping, etc.)
